IMO, It became high fashion to smoke cigars. There were a lot of trend setters doing it at the time, and then some people got the idea to open up cigar bars and for a few years they were extremely popular with the ladies (at least they were in New Orleans) And because these bars are where the ladies liked to congregate, so too did the men.
 Then after a few years the trend went the way of most trends and fell out of favor and most of the cigar bars went belly up.

great thread
I agree with the CA and dot com idea but also it was a boom for the economy in general. People had more expendible income, and we had a cool president that actually smoked cigars. It was part of the popular culture and all these things culminated in a huge spike. |
