Re: Box Pressed

I don't mind the box press - could be because I associate it with great smokes. My older cubans become "box pressed" and Padron No 35s are box pressed and that alone is reason to learn to deal with it.

Plus they don't roll around and they are easier to stack in case you want to build a house out of cigars, I guess.

I really like box pressed cigars, for the most part anyway. Dont really think I have ever had a bad one.

Re: Box Pressed

I believe box pressing came about in Cuba, back in the day it kept the smokes on the table so the boss could see what was going on in the factory. Very easy to let a smoke roll of the table and slip a few into a pocket or sock.

I think many today box press for tradition. I also find that many box pressed smokes smoke slower than a comparable size not pressed.

You could get one of little holders!

Don't mind either way really. Box Pressed sticks don't roll around when you set them down.

If I like the cigar it does not stop me from buying them, but I also do not like the feel.

The reason they smoke slower is because the tobacco is tightly pressed and does not allow the cigar to burn too fast. That is what makes the box pressed cigars worth the money and the flavor, slower burn -- smoother taste. I have yet to smoke a boxed pressed cigar that I did not absolutely love.

Really, you mean if I put a Cremosa in a box and press it for you, you will love it?

Re: Box Pressed

Box-pressed cigars were originally made to minimize the necessary space needed inside a cigar box. Shortly after the cigars are rolled, they are "pressed" into a relatively tight box. The originally round cigars assume the form of the squared-off box-press as they dry.

I've heard suggestions that the cigars are rolled this way to prevent them from rolling off various surfaces but have not found any proof. To be honest, it doesn't make much sense, as the cigars take the box-pressed form inside the box, hence the name, "box-pressed".

Re: Box Pressed

As a corrolary to the above post, there is a methodical difference between a box-pressed cigar and a square-pressed cigar. Not that one would be able to easily discern between the two, but the box-pressed cigar is pressed against other cigars inside the box. A square pressed cigar is pressed in a medieval-looking cigar mold. The rolling prevention theory may have some merit in this case.

There are several cigars that I like which are box pressed. I find that the square shape doesn't fit my hand well, but it also helps remind me not to smoke it too fast. I find that once the cigar is 1/2 smoked that it loses the edges and starts to round for me, but I like to roll cigars in my hand as I smoke them. Of course, most of my box pressed are Churchill or Lonsdale size, so that may be a factor.

I dont think the Thousand line is box pressed, I dont know about the Anni's or others. I think a true box press would be something like Sancho Panza's or Punch Rare Corojo Pita's.
