Re: shop refuses to sell opus...

Holding cigars for regulars is one thing, but when a regular refers someone, there should be no problem. Especially when it is only two cigars. I don't think I will ever understand the demand for OPUS. Some damn fine marketing in my opinion.

I agree with many of your points, but I would hardly call anyone buying 2 cigars via the phone (or anyone who makes a similar attempted purchase) "people they depend on".

Re: shop refuses to sell opus...

Just got home from an out of state funeral, got the PM from Jay, and this is my local shop who will continue to remain nameless

I am not posting to defend anyone in this, just want to add some perspective:

Typically the shop will not admit that they have any hard to find Fuente's over the phone as a policy. They sell them all at MSRP and limit even loyal walk in customers to 2 per person. Now, Jeremy probably spoke to one of the employees, did the transaction, no problem, all good and done.

Then the employee mentions it to the owner (who is oooooooold and at least a little senile) and he probably threw a fit that he did it and called back to cancel.

Now, that's wrong, once the deal is done it's done. The extent of what he should have done is called and said "this was a mistake on my employee's part, but I'll honor the deal and not do it again"

but he is a cranky 85+yo man who isn't all there anymore and he did it this way. So I completely understand your frustration, I would be equally frustrated, but I wouldn't blackball the shop over it.

So, I apologize for you bad experience on my recommendation, and if you need me to pick anything up to make good let me know

Re: shop refuses to sell opus...

I've had the same thing happen recently.
I used to shop weekly at a B&M in Destin, Fl for 3 years. I called them and explained my situation about being deployed and not being able to buy any Opus. He was like sorry but I only sell these to regular customers and since you haven't shoped here for 4 years I can't help you out.

Couldnt help but laugh a little when I read the description of the store owner,
we have a couple guys like that around my parts. Whats up with all the Senior B/M owners??

You know right or wrong, at 85+ years old this guys probably not worried about a lot of repeat business. I'd cut him a liitle slack just because of his age, heck at 85 I'm probably going to be one mean ole'bird.

I'd hate to be the one who took your order I can just imagine having an 85 year old man giving me the right act.

this is what they do at my local shop. there is a limit of 2 opus per person, and anyone can buy them.

unless supply is low. then they are hidden in the back and only loyal customers or vip members get them. but the shop owner is very up front about it.

Re: shop refuses to sell opus...

This is all quite interesting--if I had spent the time looking for the cigars I used reading this thread all this would be a mute point I would have found the cigars somewhere else

Locally we have one vendor that will sell you the box (highest price), one that limits to two (lowest price), and one that hides for their regulars (or "club" members) - If you think west to east, you should be able to figure out which is which

Re: shop refuses to sell opus...

My local B&M sold all their Anejos and Opus' to one guy who lives 60 miles away. Guy kept calling to find out when their shipment was arriving and paid the B&M's asking price for everything. I thought that was pretty shitty, but I'm sure they doubled MSRP and still sold every stick.

I appreciate when my local B&M people recognize me and will pull out sticks not available to every walk-in customer. Sucks that they took your order and then called to cancel, though.
