Good pairing with aged rum?

A friend of mine gave me a bottle of 8 yr old rum. He told me to drink like a good scotch. So I imeadatly thought "I have to drink neat", because is there any other way to enjoy a good scotch? I dont believe so. My second thought was "This is a good place for a stick". My question is whats a good cigar for aged rum? Im thinking a cuban-like cigar would be nice. I'd like to know what the Jungle thinks.
Thanks
Dave

Re: Good pairing with aged rum?

When I'm having some 18 year old Scotch, I usually reach for an Opus-X. Hmm, I think it's time to pour a glass and grab a Fuente.

18 year Glenlivet for now. But I may have to start with th Glenfiddich to get it finished off. I'm always open to suggestions on Scotch and Cigars.

I'm a McCallan's 18 year old guy. I prefer the highland malt.

Re: Good pairing with aged rum?

At first I was going to suggest a second rum, as that always goes good with rum, but then I thought otherwise.
What kind of rum is it? Just the brand/name, please.
Like most liquors, different rums have different qualities & personalities.
Sweet, smooth, harsh, etc. Obviously the choice of cigars will vary with the rum's characteristics.
In general, I'd say a nice medium to medium-full tasting cigar, not a maduro. A Punch Gran Puro or Perdomo Cameroon or Fuente Hemmingway comes to mind. Again, though, it depends on the rum.

A Punch Punch pairs very well with a sweet Rum.

Re: Good pairing with aged rum?

Bacardi 8 is a pretty decent sipping rum. I advise a couple of ice cubes, though, as it lessens the sharpness. Also, I wouldn't reach for a real strong cigar, as the this rum will get lost in it. See my previous comments above, I think they'll work well with the Bacardi.

One, maybe two small ice cubes, and two fingers of rum. As for sticks, a Party Short, or a nice, creamy Monte 4 are nice choices. I get different flavors from both with rum--the Short adding spice, the Monte adding vanilla to the mix.
