My Homemade Humidification Dome

While I was at the grocery store tonight, I was looking for something to hold my scentless cat crystals in my humi. I bought a portable toothbrush holder and a cheap pair of knee-high stockings to use as a bag for the crystals.

Well, the toothbrush holder was too long to fit straight in my 50 ct. humi, so the thought occurred to me to use the container that the knee-highs came in. It's one of those little plastic dome containers that holds the kids toys in the gum ball machines at the supermarket. It was the right size, so I drilled some holes and used one of the stockings to make a bag that I wet and put inside. Take a look at the pics. The knee-highs were 59 cents, but you could get one for 25 cents with a toy in from the gum ball machine.

Just put it in tonight, I'll have to see how it works.

Re: My Homemade Humidification Dome

Good idea and execution. However, the ball is not really needed except to make it look nicer. Also the ball might rather impede humidity exchange because there are not many holes in it. You are taking away from the efficacy of the pearls.

Was there an ordinary sponge humidifier in the humidor? It looks like it. If so you can open it up, take the sponge out and put the pearls in there. I did that to all of mine after I read about it here. Works like a charm and looks stock. Depending on the grill size of it you don't even need the sock. If it is one with a magnet you could also buy a bigger one and use that instead.

Not dissing your initiative but just wanted to give you some pointers on how to do it even better.

Awesome idea! How many ounces did you put in the ball?

Yeah, it has the ordinary foam humidifier in the lid. Wasn't enough though and I didn't want to just lay the bag on the sticks or on the wood. I guess I could replace the foam with beads. I think there's even a small screen in it , I'll have to check. No magnet to hold it, velcro.

You may be right, there may not be enough holes. Time will tell.

Not sure. I wasn't that precise, I just eyeballed the bag size. I think it was 2 or 3 heaping tablespoons.
