I can't make smoke rings above water, so i can't image i'd be any better at that. pretty neat little skill he has aquired.

We had to do that as part of a Scuba class in college. Making them is easy, but doing that thing where one goes through the other is quite a bit harder.

don't think it would work with smoke simply because of different air pressures / surface tension.
Bubbles are actuallyt quite durable under water and are somewhat maleable, compared to smoke where one will collide with the other and disperse them both probably

Well the shrinking can be attributed to water displacement. Water being squeezed between the closing gaps of the 2 rings as they approach each other, and the resulting minor void left as the one ring passes through the other, the water goes in to fill that void that's left and in doing so takes some of the air bubble with it resulting in the shrinkage factor
