One Ugly Cigar

So tonight I sat down to enjoy a Rocky Patel Connecticut and as I was removing the band (pre-light) it snagged on the wrapper. This snag quickly became a full blown tear, and resulted in the entire wrapper, minus about a half an inch at the head, falling off in one giant piece. As I looked at my now wrapperless cigar, I contemplated tossing it. But then I thought to myself, what's the worst that can happen at this point? So I lit it up and 90 minutes later, I realized I'd had myself a very enjoyable, albeit UGLY smoke.

I'm sorry I didn't have my camera with me to take a picture, but for some it may have been too much to witness (lol).

And there's proof that you can't judge a book by it's cover.

Sorry about the wrapper coming offf.

This has happened at the Evan's house a few times...for some reason, Duck's cigars always seem to come unraveled. So what we usually do is unroll the entire cigar, drop it in the bowl or stinky and start lighting it and just freebase the aroma's!

Glad to see that you turned lemons into lemonade!

Re: One Ugly Cigar

I have had people tell me that the wrapper is 70% of the taste when you smoke a cigar, (I don't agree, by the way.)
So you smoked an entirely different cigar that the one you started to smoke.
I've had that happen to me also, but KASR I've never just lit it and let it burn in the stinky. That's not freebasing whatever that is. That's a death pyre, that was popular during the 14th century.

I've heard the same thing, that the majority of the flavor comes from the wrapper, but then I've heard just the opposite; that it comes primarily from the filler and binder. Either way, the cigar had a decent flavor that didn't seem to be impacted by the lack of a wrapper. I was however, impressed at just how well it stayed together during the smoke. Other than looking ugly, it was a normal smoke.

I had myself one of those moments with an Opus not too long ago. Way to suck it up and have a great smoke.

I think the wrapper makes up for more flavor on a smaller ring gauge cigar that a larger one.

I have noticed a lot of older RP cigars have the problem with the band being glued to the wrapper. Either way, if you are enjoying what you are smoking, who cares what it looks like.

Re: One Ugly Cigar

I think the wrapper can and does add a little flavor, but the majority comes from the filler/binder. I mean look at how much of a cigar is filler/binder and how much is wrapper. 98 or 99% filler/binder compared to 1 or 2% wrapper. I think wrapper is mainly a way to make the stogie look nice.

It also depends on the type of wrapper.

I've noticed the same thing with RPs, usually I let them burn pretty close to the band and the glue will soften up and let go.

Exactly, you've got to at least give it a try, right? If it sucks then toss it, but you've gotta try!!!

The past few months I've been taking the bands off first thing, it just feels better to me, but I may have to switch back to when I used to do it this way.

Re: One Ugly Cigar

I usually let the cigar heat the band before removing it (not always close to the band just heating the glue). Recently I had a similar expierience with the RP 10th Anniversary. Not as severe though. I only lost a small patch of wrapper. I did'nt have any problems beyond that.

Re: One Ugly Cigar

From several of the comments here, I'm beginning to wonder if this isn't a problem specifically related to RP...I've not had this problem with other RP I've smoked, except once with a Vintage 90...but it wasn't near as bad as what I described above.
