Half-Arsed Humidors (and how to fix them)

Ok you may be expecting a ah actual answer to that, you know 'what to do with them' I dont have it. BUT i do have that problem and a theory, that otherwise may be weakly prepared but because i was smoking a Fuente Opus X 'FOrbidden X' while it thought of it i think its worth a listen....

Okay my humidor leaks big time, so much you can see light right through the door hinges. So i put many 'a humidification divices in there to keep it compensated for the leak. this keeps me at 64-67% but the cigars have changed in apperance ever since... the color around the veins and stems are really exaggerated, lightened to overly contrast itself from the rest of the wrapper. And the other point was the cigars are a bit overly moist, even at 64% So is it that the cigars are absorbing most of the 6 humidification devices humidity and getting overly moist? (despite the humidors overall 64% humiditiy...) the rest seems to slip out the cracks so im thinking instead of the box (its a 3 tray glass display humidor) just maintaining a steady tempiture its pumping mass amounts of moisture into the stogies while the box just lets whats left slip out to where it cant maintain a 70% rating (the sticks are soft like its 85% in there...)

sorry if this was long or confusing (im confused re-reading it) but i dont know where to go from here...im thinking some foam tape to thicken the seal but maybe its not that and i need to just keep the humidity at 60%... but that just dosent sound right! hmmm what do you guys think?

Re: Half-Arsed Humidors (and how to fix them)

As the owner of a pathetic humidor myself, I can only say that I am close to dropping some cash on a new one. I have a couple hundred buck worth of cigars in a 60 dollar box that I have to constantly fight with to keep at the correct RH. Currently, it is around 80%, because I thought my sticks were drying out and over compensated.

I think that the answer will be that it is time to spend a little coin and buy a better box.

Try putting weather stripping around the lid. I had that problem with my first humi and it fixed it up perfectly. Cheap, too.

You can solve your problem for around $10

Holds 75 Toros for under $10 at Stop&Shop.

Re: Half-Arsed Humidors (and how to fix them)

Take some Silicon glue or wood glue from a hardware store, temporarily store the cigars someplace else for 3 days. Take the glue and spread it on the poor seams, take a sponge and wipe glue off. Now the glue won't look like it's there but in the crack will be filled. Keep it open and air it out for a few days, re-season and test.

Lightbulb Re: Half-Arsed Humidors (and how to fix them)

While I agree completely with your remedies, my current strategy is to upgrade my box by continuously complaining in front of my wife about how my investment in sticks is suffering, then move from a 100 count to a 300 count box.

Re: Half-Arsed Humidors (and how to fix them)

I gave up on desk top humidors a long time ago. I never had one that sealed to my satisfaction and then there was the problem of outgrowing them. I finally bought a 70 quart cooler and 65% beads and my cigars have been happy ever since. But that leads to another cooler....and, well you know the rest of the story. There are some beautiful, well constructed desk tops out there, but they do come with a price. Try Paul's suggestion above; I think you will be very happy with the results.

Re: Half-Arsed Humidors (and how to fix them)

that's true, but if she gets pissed....

Weather stripping is incredibly cheap. You can always keep the old one as an overflow humi.

Re: Half-Arsed Humidors (and how to fix them)

thanks guys... im torn now between weather stripping and glue! One Paul always leans towards another Pauls advice.... At this point i might should just return to my Savvoy 50 cigar desktop and just store the rest in a tupperware or cooler. what about these 65% beads?? sounds interesting

ohh and also- not to rat out CI.com (because they really are a great store) but heres the crappy humidor that did me wrong!

it was my bad for not checking to see that there was a seal gaurentee or Asure-Seal or some patent BS

Re: Half-Arsed Humidors (and how to fix them)

Wow am I glad i found this thread! I have a very similar half-arsed humi myself! you can check it out at my blog (jonchia.blogspot.com). Anyways, if somebody who has tried foam tape, weather stripping, or silicon/wood glue to fix their leak problem with success, please let me know what you used so I can copy you! thanks a ton!

I currently have packing tape over all cracks in one of my humis - I'll let you know in a week or so if it worked our not. Makes it kind of hard to get into the humi though.

Re: Half-Arsed Humidors (and how to fix them)

Not exactly on topic but..
During the winter when I use heat, I have to recharge my desktops regularly however the frigedor rarely needs charging. That seal must be amazing... I do open the door every week or so to allow some fresh air in. I can watch the desktops drop down... 65 - 64 - 63 - 62 - 61 and then I drench the beads again...
