dry cigars?
I bought a 50ct glass top humidor from bargain humidors, seasoned it, calibrated the hydrometer (analog), then loaded it with about 40 cigars bought from online vendors. my problem is this, the humidity in my humidor hangs around 50 i have both the sponge type humidifier and a drymistat stick. Do you think the cigars were shipped dry and are responsible for sucking the humidity, i've had them in there for about a week now and no real change. any ideas?

Re: dry cigars?
I would check the seals on the humi first. That would be the number one reason for low humidity IMHO.

Re: dry cigars?
If you didn't season the humi first, the wood is sucking the moisture out.
Take the sticks and stick them in a zip lock. Take a shot glass or a sponge on a dish and wet it with distilled water. Set in the humi for a couple days and your levels should improve. |

Re: dry cigars?
cigars are more porous than wood. seems like they are absorbing all the water. not a good thing because if they absorb too much they will explode. i recommend taking the cigars out and putting them in a bag. season your humidor and don't put any cigars in it until the humidor is at the right humidity. may want to check your seals and get an DIGITAL hygrometer, they are far more accurate and fool proof.

Re: dry cigars?
Hard to test the seals on a glass top because you can't do a flashlight test. However, you can "feel" a good seal because when you close the lid it kind of "whooshes". Also, you might want to look into getting a better hygrometer. The analogs are notoriously flaky. I think rwhit37 meant to suggest you get a digital hygro

Re: dry cigars?
The analog hygrometers cant be trusted in most cases. If you seasoned the humi for a couple days, there probably is humidity in there. How much is hard to gauge with the analog unit.

Re: dry cigars?
All good suggestions and spot on.
As for the cigars, they *usually* are shipped more on the moist side in my limited experience... If you don't think the humi is holding I'd get them in a tupperware or similar container.Add a new clean sponge dampened with distilled water in a open sandwich bag...
