Project of the Day : A Couple Chest of Drawers for the Winadors. Lots of Pics!!!

I've been sitting on these pics for a few days cause I've been going wild trying to get everything done the girlfriend and the kids have thrown at me all weekend.
I'm surprised I actually got them almost done.

What we have here is a big chest of drawers that I made for all my odd singles, and another double wide chest of drawers for my better singles.
I figured I'd show you guys how one of these things goes together, so I took pics all along the way.
I'll start with the finished (or almost finished) products that are in my winadors already and then go through the process of making them.
That way you guys that don't want to see the process can just grab a look and move on to fun stuff like bombs.

Here's the almost finished products. I say "almost finished" because I need to add drawer pulls and tags, but I haven't settled on what I'm going to do yet. That fluff will get done later.
Here ya go...

Re: Project of the Day : A Couple Chest of Drawers for the Winadors. Lots of Pics!!!

This is the first of the two new chests I made. The drawers are from the screwed up humi's I got from CC. I broke them down, sanded out everything, then put them back together. It probably would have been best if I had made the drawers from scratch.
Hindsight really is 20/20.
I'll take some detailed pics of the Padron chest later.
Here's a shot of the chest I'll discuss.

I was just thinking of building something like this over the weekend for my vino. I'm going to need more cedar to make it happen though. I can't wait for your in process pics.

Lookin great by the way!

Re: Project of the Day : A Couple Chest of Drawers for the Winadors. Lots of Pics!!!

In this picture, you can see the drawer glides and spacers.
In order to decide what measurements I use, I take into account the dimensions of the parts I already have.
I know from experience that I want a strong 1/16 to 1/8 inch of play added to the height of the drawer. That allows it to slide easily on the glides without binding up.
That dimension is very important.
Too much and the drawer will hang way down when you pull it out, and cigars can roll out. Also, if the drawer is hanging crooked, all the weight of the drawer's contents are concentrated on one small pivot point. That's an incredible amount of pressure on drawer glides that are just glued. Aside from that, it looks sloppy.
In the picture you can see the sides of the box as well as the glides and the spacers.

Re: Project of the Day : A Couple Chest of Drawers for the Winadors. Lots of Pics!!!

In the center foreground of this pic you will see a spacer clamped to the board. The whole deal is also clamped to the top of the table saw.
That spacer runs the length of the space that will comprise the drawer glides.
It's not glued.
This manuever only serves a few purposes.
It will hold my drawer glides back one inch from the front of the box.
That way you can't see them, all you see is drawers that are miraculously suspended in time and space.
The glides really look like hell if they are flush to the front of the chest. This is another one of those "from experience" things.
The spacer also saves me a lot of work measuring. It is almost impossible to line up all the spacers and glides. If I did get them lined up, then I'd have to line them up again every time I get a piece glued in place.
It's the only way to go.

Re: Project of the Day : A Couple Chest of Drawers for the Winadors. Lots of Pics!!!

In this pic, I've glued the glides in place.
Notice that the very first glide has been glued and clamped in place.
That gives me two solid sides to work from. It makes gluing the glides and placing the spacers a breeze.
The spacers don't get glued. They are just there to keep a perfect distance between the glides. Most times the spacers end up glued in place at least a little bit. I use a chisel to pry them loose and remove excess glue. That comes a little later.

Re: Project of the Day : A Couple Chest of Drawers for the Winadors. Lots of Pics!!!

What we will do now is "sandwich" the glued glides.
Here's another point. The glides are higher than the spacers. Once again, super important. When I place the board on top, I'll weight it down.
If the project is small, I can just clamp the perimeter and that'll provide ample pressure to seat the glides and allow the glue to dry.
If the project is too big, like this one, I have to do something else.
In this case, I weighted the sammich with bricks. Worked great.
A point...
The glides are sitting in slippery glue and there is nothing to keep them from moving at this moment except for the very first glide that was clamped. It's had some time to dry, but very little. It's not enough to keep things from moving.
Placing the sammich board on and weighting it down has to be down with extreme care, because if anything moves, we'll have crooked drawers and a big screwed up mess.
