Puffer Fish with many spikes

I grabbed a handful of some H. Upmann (DR) coronas at the B&M the other day for 75% off...I figured what the hell. These things had a ton of age on them as the yellow cello indicated and appeared to be well taken care of.
Nevertheless, I decided to fire one up the other night. To be honest the first inch just blew, it was bitter, harsh and tasted like paper. I was disappointed but pressed on anyway.... and then it happened... WOW this cigar really changed its profile, nutty, buttery, smooth and the aroma was outstanding, right down to the nub. It was one of the best cigars I had in a while. I'm glad I gave it a chance and didn't pitch it. My question is how can a cigar start out so bad and end so good? and could this be common of cigars with lots of age on them?

Re: Bad Cigar...No WAIT...Great Cigar!
Funny thing is I picked up a Padron Landres that had close to 4 years on it and smoked about the first inch and thought "Man this thing sucks." Now I'm wondering if it would've started to get better after that first inch.

Re: Bad Cigar...No WAIT...Great Cigar!
hehe, I posted awhile back, I usually hate the first 1/4" or so of most cigars. Most don't work for me until about the first 1/2" or so.

Re: Bad Cigar...No WAIT...Great Cigar!
Oddly enough, I find myself loving the very first draw with some cigars and then being bored with the next 1/4 inch. An example of this for me is the El Mejor Espresso. For me, the NuBs I have tried are like this. The first few draws have been quite unremarkable. This was unexpected because of the marketing strategy saying it should start off in the "sweet spot."

I'm not gonna lie, though. I think the Exodus '59 torpedo is probably most consistent box pressed stogue you can get for between 4.50 and 5.00 bucks. I can't help but grab a handful everytime I'm in the shop. I've just had some issues where the bottom third really changes around in the opposite direction heh.

Me too. It must have something to do with the lighting of the cigar. I can't remember the last cigar that I actually liked the first few puffs.
