Residual Cigar smoke on clothes, affecting kids?

Sorry, title should read "Residual Cigar smoke on clothes, affecting kids?"

Wife went to the doctor today and doctor said I should not smoke because the residual chemical from cigar smoke (she did make sure it was cigars too not just cigarrettes), on your clothes or your body can affect kids. For younger ones, more chance of SIDS and increased allergies, and another doctor even told me there are links to autism.

The doctor said I should not even smoke outside with all windows closed and far from the inside. Which didn't make too much sense to me. I did also tell her it would make sense with cigareetes, which have chemicals, but cigars are all natural.

This is the third doctor I have heard this from, one of them my cousin. So I'm not sure if I'm just running into the bunch of anti-smoking nazi's, or there is some reality to this.

As of now, I guess I change my clothes and put them in the outside hamper, just in case.

Anyone else hear this or have input?

Re: Residual Cigar Smoke affecting kids?

that sounds a little crazy to me..

how young is the little one?

I'm sure that it matters exponetially less as the child gets older if it would make a difference at all.

I can't image that it would be any worse than not changing clothes after cleaning your house with some kind of cleaner.

Re: Residual Cigar Smoke affecting kids?

I have a number of kids, 2 with confirmed asthma, and I have smoked in the house and the kids are all doing very well. I don't smoke in the same room with them, my smoking room has no return air to the house and I wash my hands and brush my teeth before playing with my 3 yr. old after smoking (she doesn't like the smell of the smoke). My wife works in a medical clinic actually a few and have discussed it with our family DR. and those she works with..its almost a 50/50 split on the opinion. It is bad for anyone to inhale smoke (DUH) but as for an increased risk its not definite (that I know of). I have thrown the football with my sons while smoking and they do not seem to have any after effects. There are a ton of bad things that we breathe in at least with cigars I am doing it to myself...LOL..just my

Yea, and the residual carbon monoxide from cars kills too. Oh, and the residual pesticides on fruit can't be good either.

I'm sure that's a little far fetched.

Sounds like BS to me. Did she name the chemicals? Any studies to back this up? The truth is that doctors know little about what causes SIDS or autism, though they're quick to confuse correlation with causation.

keep those kids away from weenie roasts and s'more cooking campfires too.

The mere odor of a few molecules isn't going to hurt anyone. Now if you let the lil snookums use your nub for a paciifier... I might buy it.

Nannyism.

I'm not a doctor, but I could play a bad Vet on TV, a Goat Otolaryngologist.

Re: Residual Cigar Smoke affecting kids?

I grew up in a third floor apartment that was painted entirely with lead paint, and my dad would drive me and my friends to Fenway every summer in a Pinto while we wrestled in the back, unrestrained.

We worry too much now 'a days.

Autism is just a bunch of correlations now. With her saying that, she's just as bad as those nut-job parents (no offense) keeping their children from getting vaccines thinking they cause autism, which creates a bigger risk than they're trying to prevent.

I'm calling BS on this, and I'm a med student....

I saw it in the movie "Mr. Mom" with Michael Keaton. I think it was set in the South.
