New To Cigar Smoking and the Community
Hello, I am new here and to the wonderful world of cigars. I have only recently smoked cigars, I was given 2 CAO Golds and 2 Macanudo Cafes as a gift for our wedding. My wife and I are paying our way through medical school so its never been easy to afford them, however, for a wedding gift I got a brand new 100ct Milano Glass Top Humidor from my Father. It is pretty nice looking. I ordered the digital hygrometer and a Boveda Calibrating Kit. I got the hygrometer calibrated and I have been reading about seasoning my Humidor. As of right now, I have wiped the humidor down with a damp papertowel (using distilled water), and I put a shot glass filled with distilled water in the bottom along with my Puck-ifier 100 70% version http://www.cigarmony.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=94 . A few questions to get me started. One, how long do I need to leave the shot glass in there? I have read anywhere from 1 day to 12 days. Is this the best way to season or should I just order some Boveda Humidor Seasoning Kits? Also, when can I start adding some cigars? I only have 2, and and it might be a while before I can start filling it but I am just curious. This seems like a great place, glad to be here! Sorry for all the newb questions, I tried to research as much as possible before asking but the questions I asked have a pretty broad range of answers. Also, here is some pics of my new humidor!

Re: New To Cigar Smoking and the Community
Don't worry about 70% humidity. Most like to keep there humi between 60-65% relative humidity. 70% is way overrated. Looks like you've got a nice humi, so take care of it. There is a lot of controversy on how to season a humidor, but from what you have described you have done nothing wrong. Enjoy those smokes. That is all that matters.

Once you start smoking more you will find out what humidity you prefer. Sounds like you are doing things right! Get yourself some stogies for that thing and enjoy!

Personally I'm a big fan of one of the members here who makes and sells RH beads- Shilala
http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthread.php?t=152606 Others are a fan of his product too! http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthr...hlight=shilala I'd get some of these and I think you can start putting cigars in that humi right away. Enjoy ![]()

Re: New To Cigar Smoking and the Community
I would leave the glass in for a day or so after the hygrometer reads 70%. Take it out and let the humi settle; then add the cigars. The humidity may drop a little with the cigars in there, but should even out if you keep the humidifier moist and what not.
On a side note, you're not alone. What year are you? I'm currently a 2nd year in a DO program; we've got a few docs on here as well.

Re: New To Cigar Smoking and the Community
Your probably like me then, nice big humidor with no smokes to fill it because it all goes to tuition! I am currently doing my Orthopedic Surgery Residency and my wife is in her 4th and final year of med school. I really don't even know what I like yet. All I know is that I like mild to medium cigars and the few I have tried have been amazing with the exception of one Carlos Torano I tried and did not like.

I usually get a couple in a week, but smoke the pipe daily, so I keep well stocked. If you hang around here long enough, you'll get to that point also. How's ortho? I start my rotations at the end of June (boards on june 20th, not looking forward to those at all). Hoping to end up in Internal Med (worked on an ICU as a nurse aid and just loved the setting of critical care).

Re: New To Cigar Smoking and the Community
Sounds like you are on the right track with seasoning your humi. When you get your Puck-ifer you should be in good shape. You may want to consider switching out the beads it contains with 65% beads at some point. IMHO, cigars do much better at that RH or lower, but everyone has their own opinion. Also, find the coolest part of the house and keep your humidor there. Here in the south, heat is your enemy when it come to your sticks.

Re: New To Cigar Smoking and the Community
Thanks for the help. I have quite a bit of fluctuation in my humidor but I read thats pretty normal only after 1 day. I went to bed and it was about 69%, woke up it was about 75%, cut the grass it was down to 71% and now its hanging pretty steady at 71%. I think I will take the shot glass of distilled water out if its still ~70% later tonight.
