It neutralizes the effect of the nicotine which is what is causing the woozy feeling. The exact physical process is not completely clear to me.

Found this tidbit of info:

"Nicotine inhibits the release of insulin from the pancreas, a hormone that is responsible for removing excess sugar from a person's blood. This leaves the smoker in a slightly hyperglycemic condition, meaning he has more sugar in his blood than is normal."

This could account for the nic buzz - however, when the body registers it, it may be trying to overcompensate by releasing too much insulin thus throwing the smoker into a balance related illness. No how consuming sugar and/or caffeine to correct this is anyone's guess. Can anyone else clue us in?

Thanks for all the great info guys. I knew I could count on this forum to give me some insight. I will be stocking up on sugarcubes and mountain dew. I had a full stomach and don't think that I had swallowed any juices, but I probably smoked it too fast. It was tasty though and got carried away. Thanks again!!

Probably a mixture of the caffeine and Nicotine. The body can't handle too much of both. If you hadn't eaten anything, the affet could have been heightened. Also, the caffeine can sometimes hide the Nic buzz IMO. I took some medicine with caffeine in it one time and felt sick, with no buzz. Just eat something before, or eat something sweet with your coffee. Should have better results.

Re: Anyone else have this reaction

Being the noob to nicotine I am I have very little tolerance which means I have to do some prep before smoking. I absolutely have to eat before and smoke within about a hour of eating, I also have to smoke the powerful sticks slowly and most importantly avoid the 2nd hand smoke. If I don't inhale too much 2nd hand that usually helps cut down the buzz quite a bit. Coffee really helps too especially with some Splenda. Splenda isn't sugar but it definitely helps cut down the buzz and make me feel better if I overdid it a bit. Nicotine also tends to give me some warning signs- when I start to get real light headed thats usually time to put the stogie down as bad times are coming.

Not with a cigar. When I first tried Copenhagen many years ago I was sick within minutes.

Have you tried a La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero? Its close to that nicotine sickness feeling you get with a wad of chew. It is a rush to the head.

Insulin plays a vital role in the regulation of your blood glucose levels. There is another hormone that is insulin's counterpart, glucaon or something, for when your blood sugar levels are too low and the body is in need of glucose synthesis.

Ive not experienced the effect of consuming quantities of sugar to counteract nicotine buzz. And Im not an endocrinologist, so I cant speculate much either.
