Who here likes Candela wrappers?

My very first cigar, about 10 months ago, was a Macanudo Prince Philip Jade. I have since learned [I think] that the greenish wrapper on the cigar is called a "candela" wrapper.

So, after a few of those, I moved to a natural, then my first ever maduro wrapper, a La Gloria Cubana Series R #6. And it was AWESOME!!!

Funny, the cigar shop guy told me that the candela wrapper is very mild, good for inexperienced smokers. However, I find that the maduro wrappers, are, for lack of a better word, easier to smoke. And they taste better to me.

However, I've seen some good deals on Candela wrapped cigars and would like to maybe buy a five-pack to have some in my new humidor.

So, any of you who like Candela wrappers, can you please make me some recommendations, including anything you find helpful? Brand names, sites to get good prices, good sizes to buy them in, when you prefer to smoke it (I've often heard candelas described as a late morning/daytime smoke.)

Thanking all the BOTL in advance, and long ashes to all!

I think I've got a few Indian Tabac Candelas left from a fiver I got off the devil site. They didn't really do it for me. PM me your address and I'll send 'em to you.

Yep, I love most things Camacho. But the Candela is bland and unpleasant.

Re: Who here likes Candela wrappers?

I find the Camacho Candela is actually quite interesting.
A mild but sweet/spicy smoke that keeps my attention.
Give it a try.

Re: Who here likes Candela wrappers?

Candelas are virtually free - just take the paper tube out of a roll of paper towels and suck on it - all the great candela flavor and a fraction of the cost. If you prefer a robusto size, try a toilet paper tube.

Just kidding - but seriously, if you are near Disney then you should also be near Corona Cigar - they last time I was in Orlando I noticed they had several brands of green gars - maybe try some others and find one you like. I picked up a few of their house brand candelas a while back and they were, shall we say, VERY VERY VERY light. In my neck of the woods, I NEVER see candelas so at least you can do a comparison.

Remember, those good deals on candelas are only a good deal if you actually like the cigar and will enjoy them.

A better suggestion might be to just get some good maduros since you seem to like them a lot better anyway. While not as inexpensive as candelas, you can still get some good buys if you shop around the 'net.

Welcome to the slope

Re: Who here likes Candela wrappers?

I've never had the opportunity to have one. They don't have them at my local shop, and I try not to order on the internet too much

Re: Who here likes Candela wrappers?

Had Graycliff candela once and it was not great. Nothing memorable about it at all except I smoked it in the cold and the wrapper was popping and cracking every 12 seconds. I do have a Camacho sitting in the humi that I have been meaning to try. I just may have to torch that one tonight.

I should hope so.
Benji Menendez, master blender for Partagas, was in the Kingstowne store of Old Virginia Tobacco yesterday talking and educating people about wrappers and their influence on the taste.

The owner of OVTC happened to ask about Candella wrappers. Benji smiled and said his grandfather in Cuba used to make a lot of money off the Candela wrapper, but he hates it. I got a good chuckle out of that.

He said it is GREAT for cigar makers and farmers, but not so much for consumers.
It's a very young leaf. From planting to rolling is maybe 6 months, including growing time.
That means cheaper storage quicker production since you don't warehouse the wrapper leaf for years at a time. He described the taste and to HIM it was unpleasant.

Everyone has different tastes, but I found it comical him saying his family made money off a cigar wrapper that he hated.

So they would make money because of reduced costs in storage and handling? Because it does not seem like candela wrappers are popular at all.
