Ring Gauge (This ones about cigars)

Hi all, I recently began smoking cigars and was wondering what everyone else prefered size-wise compared to me. Personally, I like the smaller ring gauges. I love 46-48 and will sometimes spring for a Churchill sized stick. They just feel better in my mouth and hand. They also seem to peak sooner, which is good for a newb like me. It helps to hold my interest. I am just starting to be able to taste something other than smoke. I'm still not quite sure what it is, but its better than it was.

Is there anyone else here like that, or do you all go big?

I have found myself trending more towards the smaller RG cigars also... for a very long time most of the cigars I bought would either be a robusto or torpedo, and many of my go to smokes are, but I am starting to find greater enjoyment in sub-50 RG cigars.

Started out smoking robustos and the 50-52 RG size and still do. Occasionally have a smaller RG but the go to is 50-52. Shaking in my boots with the thought of the Perdomo Cuban Parejo Svillekid sent me, I think it's a Belicoso #2, whatever it is that thing has an RG of 60! Yikes

I smoke everything from about a 36 to 54...and enjoy most of them. I do prefer the larger rings, but seldom have the time for them. I find that since I tend to smoke way to fast, the larger ring helps to keep the smoke cool.

Confusing thread. I don't consider 46 to be small. 30-40 I consider small. 42-46 mid, 47 to 50 big, 50+ cock sized. That's just me though

And I like them all.

Re: Ring Gauge (This ones about cigars)

To my palate, the larger ring cigars have more complexity of flavor as a general rule. I rarely smoke anything smaller then a 48. My usual smokes range from 50-54.

I started out with big long cigars, then gravitated towards the more flavorful smaller cigars such as the PC, It just packs more body and concentrates the flavors.

I prefer cigars with ring gauge in the 44-48 range with the length being from 4.5 - 5.5.

I really like robustos and prefer other sizes at 42-52.

Who am I kidding, I like 'em all!

My thoughts exactly. I started with the Robustos and Rothschilds, but find the smaller sizes much more flavorfull. My favorite size for a "normal" cigar is the corona, and these are what I smoke the most. I do, however, smoke the Churchill and Double Corona sizes when I have the time or am at a "cigar occasion". Toros and Robusto sizes are reserved mostly for testing (more commonly available in my area) or when I have time to sit outside in warm weather and enjoy a longer smoke.

I tend to like the larger ring gauges only with the longer cigars. I don't find the larger ring gauges to be as complex and flavorfull with the shorter lengths as the corona and petit corona. On the other hand, I have not had a lot of luck with the longer cigars in the smaller ring gauges. Long coronas and panatellas seem to "load up" and get bitter about half way through, where I have found the Churchills and Double Coronas often tasting acceptable passed the band. So, I select my cigar mostly based on available time and not as much on simply ring gauge or size. As an example:

Time Available - Cigar Size Selected

< 30 min - Cigarello or Small Panatella / Short Corona / Senorita
30 min to 45 min - Petit Corona or Corona
45 min to 1 hour - Corona or Rothschild / Robusto
1 hour to 1.5 hours - Rothschild / Robusto or Torpedo or Toro
> 1.5 hours - Torpedo or Churchill

Since I tend to spend most of my smoking time in the 30 min to 1 hour range, the Corona usually works best for me as the best mix of flavor and burn.
