How long will you hang in there before you chuck a lousy cigar?

I usually try to smoke all of any cigar that I light up. I haven't found one yet that I just haven't been able to make it through. Of course I've smoked several that I haven't enjoyed, but I consider those educational experiences.

My story is a sad one. I don't get the opportunity to have more than one maybe two cigars a week if I'm lucky. And when it comes time I'm usualy at a casino or the links where I only brought one or two so if I throw it out I'm left with nothing but beer and an empty heart. Not to mention I'm a college student with a $400 truck payment every month, so my cigar budget is based on what I save by not eating lunch.

For these reasons I tend try and stick it out, mind you I will not do this for all of them, but I try to for most. I also won't take it all the way to the nub like I would with my favorite cigars, but I'll take it past half way.

But there are exceptions to every rule, for instance I have not met a RyJ that I liked, and knowing from past experience with those if I don't like it after the first inch, its gunna smoke its self out in the tray (by tray I'm mean tea sauser ).

A lot of it can depend on the mood I'm in. Sometimes I'll ride it out other times I will pitch it quick. If it has a major draw problem than it's a goner. Can really be about how much I've spent or what kind of luck I have had with that particular cigar before.

I'm the same way. If I can't draw anything out of it without imploding, then it's done.

BengalMan and I discussed this the other day, when he had to put out a very nice Cuban.

The general consensus we came to was, if it sucks (burn, taste, draw, wrapper etc.) and you can't fix it, pitch it. We both have put out cigars at 1/4" - 1/2" if they suck. Sometimes it hurts, but it needs to be done.

I usually smoke it about half way. I have had very god stogies that were terrible the first inch. I try to give it a fair chance.

I have to say I would hang in there about 3/4 of way and by then I can honestly say I gave it a fighting chance...

unfortunately I have had four cigars this week and three were pitched somewhat early I gave a partagas short just about halfway (it was my first and was hoping I would like it but didn't) then about 5 min. later a neighbor that I was at a party with gave me one of his favorite cigars. a juicy lucy, I tried very hard to smoke this as he was sitting there with me but the sweetness was killing me and it got thrown into the fire within 5 min. (he wasn't looking) Then today I revisited a short story and gave it 2\3 only because everyone says how good they are and I had to see if I had previously missed something (I had not)

So basically that was my longwinded version of saying if I hear a lot of good reviews I'll give it much more of a shot than if it is something I have heard little about and am not enjoying in which case it may be 1/4 inch. There are way to many good cigars to smoke something you don't like

Also, maybe I'm a masochist, but if I don't like a cigar that other people seem to enjoy then I give the cigar a second chance. It's possible that it was just a bum stick.

If it is really bad I will let it go out at just over the half way point. If it is tolerable, I will smoke it till I have to put it out.

Usually half way unless I think there is a chance it could possibly improve, then maybe down to a 1/3 but usually half way. If it's just horrible in the beginning, why waste your time, lay it down and go grab another one out of the humi.

I just had a Jose L Piedra that lasted exactly 1 minute before getting chucked. It looked rough and smoked even rougher. It's too bad since this is normally a decent enough cigar...this particular one was gifted so I can't vouch for it's upbringing.
