How long will you hang in there before you chuck a lousy cigar?

I always try to give a cigar an inch before I toss it.
Sometimes I can't. If it's super bitter or terribly peppery I'll chuck it inside five minutes.
I'm always afraid that I'm going to miss the good things that a cigar will offer when it's halfway burned. Lately I've had a run of bad luck when it comes to trying new cigars. I think it's shortened my patience quite a bit.
I like to go back and smoke a lot of Old Faithfuls when I get like this. Sometimes I even take a break for a few days.
I'd like to hear some other points of view. How long do you try to stick out a bad smoke before you toss it? Why? What are your own personal "rules" when it comes to previewing a new cigar?
Thanks!!!
Scott

Depends on the size of the stick for me. I have less patience with a petite corona than I do with a churchill. Generally if I'm not feeling it after the first third of the cigar is ash, then I'm tossing it. I won't choke down a stick just for the sake of saying I nubbed the flavor of the week.

All the way to the end! Seriously, though, that's pretty much how far I go. The only time that I ever, ever pitched a cigar before the end was on a Don Elias. And, even that one I smoked half way. I really don't personally understand the idea of pitching a cigar within a few minutes of starting them. Regardless of flavor, you're never going to know how good a cigar is, unless you smoke the whole thing. My opinion is that, at least for me, the cigars are too expensive, and I don't have enough of them, in order to justify just pitching them after a few minutes. The only reason I felt ok with pitching the Don Elias was that it was gifted to me. If I had paid for it personally, I would have ridden that puppy all the way to the ground. Fortunately, I didn't, which is all the more reason to appreciate the gift. That's my

I usually do about 3/4ths of a smoke. i give it the benifit of the doubt until half way. If it is still a leather brick then about the 1/4 mark its gone.

If a cigar starts bad for me, the stick is ruined for me. The cigars I buy a lot of are good all the way through, if not, I rarely give another shot. There's too many good ones out there to fight into the "sweet spot".

I give each cigar a fight chance....after 1/2 way if it is still no good....it's trashed.

Depends on how many are in the humi.

About the only time I will pitch a stick is if I can't draw it easy. It really has to suck to get pitched.

I'll give it close to halfway. If I don't like the first third and the second third gets no better, I'm pitching it.

Re: How long will you hang in there before you chuck a lousy cigar?

I read lots and lots of reviews before I make a purchase. That means the ones I do fire up, although not all fantastic, I end up smoking to at least the two thirds mark. Now, I have had a couple that didn't make it to the one inch mark, they were Thompson's house brands that came with a humidor I purchased. I'm too cheap to throw down a stick because it isn't great, but I won't smoke one that tastes like either.

Re: How long will you hang in there before you chuck a lousy cigar?

Depends on the cigar. There are plenty of cigars that if I had tossed after the first inch I wouldn't have gotten to know some great sticks. However, if the flavor is just something I really don't like then it gets tossed.

Re: How long will you hang in there before you chuck a lousy cigar?

All depends.
If it's really really tight all the way through, I give up pretty quickly.
If only a bit too tight, there's a chance that will improve either on its own or with some help, and as a result the flavor will get way better.
If the draw is fine but the actual flavor sucks (I usually only find this happens with NCs), then I have no reason to think it will get any better and don't wait long.
If the draw is fine and the flavor is fine (but boring), I'll try to get to at least half way through, since these cigars have the potentially to suddenly become very good.

On top of that, depends on the price of the cigar, my mood, whether I have time to light another cigar if I ditch the first, etc etc.
