Re: I odnt have a hygormeter

- Saturate a brand new sponge or a clean washcloth with distilled water and wipe down the interior panels of your humidor
- Follow that up with a dry washcloth to absorb excess moisture from the panels
- Place one or two shot glasses filled with distilled water in the humidor's compartment
- Do not disturb for 3 to 4 days

While you're waiting for the above process to complete its course, order some beads and a digital hygrometer. While some may not feel that a hygrometer is necessary in a smaller setup, I feel that it is an absolute must in gauging the enviroment of your stogies. A few dollars towards peace of mind is priceless.

Best of luck with the humidor. You'll outgrow that baby in no time.

This is what I love about CS. When you ask a beginner question does someone laugh at your lack of knowledge? NO, we've all been there.
Do gorillas get angry when someone posts a question before searching older posts? NO, they are quick to give help without sounding condescending. Heck noone even corrcts your spellng!

guevara stated "SORRY IF IM ASKING STUPID QUESTIONS"
Well, I found in this club there is no such thing.
(even if your post is misconceived the most you will get is a helpful suggestion w/ a slight sarcasm )

Although I am not a very vocal member of CS, I'm very happy to be part of it. I spent a year before making any posts. The reason for this is because any question I may have had about buying, storing or smoking has already been posted. guevara check out some of these posts. You will find reasons why regulating humidity is important as well as unbiased reviews on several hydrometers AND the best shops to buy them.

The only thing that "ticks me off" is when... no one... is spelled "noone" ...

Walmarts dig. therm/hygrometer is a good start. Then when you replace it you can use it in your first cooler.

Go with the beads and get yourself an adjustable hydrometer. If you keep any amount of cigars you want to make sure that they are cared for properly. Cigars are an investment and you want them to taste like you just got them from your local B&M. Only better...

For as un-accurate as those analog hygros that come with humidors are, you aren't missing much.

Pick up digital one.
That pretty much nails it. My humidor story: About a year ago I bought my first humidor. I tried desperately to get it to the desired 65-70% humidity. In a desert climate, that can be tough to do. I seasoned mine - twice - using all the recommended techniques. I could never reach anything above 50-55% on the analog, even with a gel jar and a full bowl of distilled water inside. At one point I had mold growing inside the humidor at an apparent humidity level that should not have supported mold growth. I soon found out why.

Even with the measures I took, the humidity in my humidor was dropping almost daily. At one point it read around 30 percent. In desperation, I went to the owner of a local cigar shop/lounge and asked him what I could do. He said that for starters, get a digital hygrometer and make sure my humidity was as low as I thought it was. I put the digital in and left it overnight. In the morning I checked it: 70.4 degrees, 69 percent humidity - almost ideal conditions for cigars (and by this time I had taken the water bowl out). My analog hygrometer read just below 30 percent. I knew that analogs could be off, but one that reads as much as 40 percent low is pretty much worthless.

When my analog hygrometer told me that my humidity was 55 percent it was actually about 95 percent, which is why I had mold growing on the sides of the humidor (fortunately none on the sticks, though). You should feel blessed that you don't have an analog hygrometer. Buy yourself a good digital one. I paid about $20 for mine at a cigar shop. I keep my humidor around 66-67% with a gel jar and beads.

Re: I odnt have a hygormeter

Meh, get the beads and skip the hygrometer. I used to worry about my rh and get kind of anal about it, but now I realize if I keep my beads 80% clear it's irrelevant what my hygro says. I don't even keep one in the coolerador anymore. But get the beads, they make life 100% easier. If it's a desktop or smaller coolerador humidor I highly reccommend the Puckifier from Cigarmony. http://www.cigarmony.com/index.asp?P...ROD&ProdID=267 Oh, and type in sr2008 as a coupon code.

If you love your cigars it would be a bad idea to not have a hydrometer. Like "Let's take the giant Ape and make him a broadway star!" bad idea.....
