I don't complain about them enjoying some bud, and they don't complain about my enjoyment of some leaf. We get along great anyways and it's never been an issue.

Re: "Neighbor" etiquette?

great thread with lots of good responses, I think a majority of us will smoke them anyway, but will also take factors into consideration such as a neighbor having a dinner party, or child's birthday party, we wanna smoke and realize if we wait even 30 minutes their event will be done. Most of us will still do it, but do it politely and if someone is rude to use... F 'em

Re: "Neighbor" etiquette?

this thread's made me realize i've got some pretty decent neighbors - but then again, we're all far enough away from each other that it really isn't an issue.

i do agree that being courteous is the right way to go...

Well said. Being a good neighbor usually yields benefits in many areas, not the least of which is carefree cigar smoking.

Re: "Neighbor" etiquette?

I just yell at 'em: "Hey, you quit eating my grass and pooping in my yard and I'll put out my cigar." They never quit so neither do I.

Serious note: I have no neighbors close by so no problem.

As far as neighbors, I try to be courteous. I live by the axiom, "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" as much as possible. This assumes of course they are reasonable people...

For instance, if they don't mind you watching their 17-year-old daughter in her room at night, your cigar smoke should not be a problem.

Re: "Neighbor" etiquette?

I REALLY appreciate you all answering my original question with some honest-to-goodness answers.

I was out there tonight and the neighbors daughter was coughing a LOT. I don't think it was related to my cigar because I'd see her turn on the light in her bathroom (one window over) and then back into her room. I put my cigar out, thinking I sure wasn't HELPING the situation at all by smoking 15' from her bedroom window.

So I guess at the end of the day, it's all about manners...not necessarily etiquette. Right?

I'm generally pretty considerate. One of my neighbor's 17yr-old daughter has her bedroom window about 20' from my 'smoking area' so if her window is open, I usually gauge the wind direction before lighting up. If they are having a dinner party outside, I usually don't light one either.

Other than that, their dog uses the air to send "barks" into my yard, I guess I'm just returning the favor.
good thing there are only two pages then.

Re: "Neighbor" etiquette?

I live in an apartment complex, but the apartments are set up more like duplexes (one story, side by side) so there is a lot of contact between the neighbors and myself. One neighbor has come in from the parking lot as I am smoking a stick and has said "Mmmmm, I thought I smelled a cigar." A neighbor across the sidewalk has never said anything pro or con, but gave me a grill after a few conversations across the fence while I was smoking so I doubt she finds my cigar smoking offensive.

In any event, I think I would be mindful of my neighbors feelings, but being mindful doesn't mean being banned from outdoor smoking.
