In Denial or Incognito?
First off I’d like to apologize for my lack of participation since joining The Jungle. I know that the first 642 questions I’ll have can be answered with three simple words – “search the forum”. So as a n00b, I am spending all my time reading/searching and not actively participating.
Here's my first stab at discussion, or rather a chance for everyone to laugh at the n00b: My wife is, uh, opposed to cigars, so to speak. As such I spend some effort trying to mask/hide/cover/reodorify as much as possible. Lengths I go to in order to enjoy a cigar include: - My "smoking jacket". A long sleeve wool shirt I keep in the trunk of my car, and wear while I smoke, or when shopping in a B&M that allows smoking indoors. Wool is surprisingly good at not holding odor, so other closet smokers take note. - Pocket flask of mouthwash in my bag. - Hide my herfador on the top shelf of the back closet, far out of reach for those under about 5'10". - Cash cigar purchases only. - Matches, or other not-cigar-specific fire. - When in doubt, blame a buddy. "I was trying to stand upwind, but once Frank fired up a cigar the wind kept changing direction!" - Altoids (DO NOT drink cold orange juice right after an Altoid, by the way). This list is by no means comprehensive. Anyone else have to go stealth? -Pete |

![]() Nah, it took mine 3 years to come around. I have actually slowed down considerably in the last few months, but this is only a seasonal thing.

Re: In Denial or Incognito?
I don't have to go stealth, but my wife doesn't like cigars either. I get that look whenever a package arrives in the mail or I come back with a bag from the B&M. Our agreed rules are that I don't smoke inside the apartment and I don't smoke around her. I've been known to go for long walks, stay up later, or wake up early to enjoy a cigar from the humi. I was going to enjoy one yesterday afternoon seeing as it was a memorial day but the balcony has no roof and mother nature wanted to celebrate with rain.

Re: In Denial or Incognito?
Pete! What is going on here??? My wife hates it too but i sure as hell don't hide it. Hiding things from your wife will only get you more in trouble in the long run. If it's something you really enjoy, you need to tell wifey so she can compromise with you. I also have to have the change of clothes, altoids, hand sanitizer & listerine but it keeps the peace. And you can't expect to pay cash for smokes forever, there's so many deals on the internet it's really hard to pass them up (especially with CA taxes
). What if you want to go bigger on a humi? Cooler maybe? You can't hide a cooler from her... IMHO be real with your wife. It will help you in the long run ![]()

Re: In Denial or Incognito?
Well, lemme clarify - she KNOWS I smoke cigars. The thing I'm hiding is the frequency! Guys nights out, business trips, golf, etc, are all fair game and even warrant an, "I'm pulling an extra $40 out of checking for some cigars". But the solo weekday stuff I try to keep low profile. Added bonus - I have super short hair which doesn't hold much odor. I remember my teenage days of long hair holding the stench of cigarettes for days after I went to rock concerts. That was nasty! However, today my hand smells like Gurkha. -Pete |

Re: In Denial or Incognito?
I'll admit it: I'm in stealth mode, too.
![]() My wife hates cigars, cigarettes, or anything that burns for that matter. I met her back in October of 2000 and she's expressed her disgust for smoking since then. She made me promise to quit smoking cigarettes shortly after I met her, and I have been covert with my cigarettes up until I finally decided to call it quits a little over a week ago. Cigars - she doesn't mind, as long as I limit it to vacations and "special gatherings," whatever that's supposed to mean. Other than that, I keep it all on the down low. I have one 50-count humidor in our living room and I do my best to not pull anything out of that box unless we're going on vacation or heading out to some "special gathering." The rest of my stash, I keep in the office. I'd rather keep it there anyway because of the temperature-controlled environment, the size of my furniture, and the fact that almost everyone I enjoy smoking with happens to be co-workers. So, it's okay to be stealth if you have to. I take a shower before I leave the office and change into more casual clothes before I head home. My covert operation has been in effect for many years. Sometimes, you just have to do what you have to do to be happy. Good luck...and stay slick like a ninja. Hahaha. |

Re: In Denial or Incognito?
Gotta bow up to the wife . If you enjoy smoking a cigar once in while she shouldn't give you grief about it. I'm sure there are things she does that you are not fond of.
