Re: Hygormeter in the firdge

perfect no, but it's a good test. You can also get a calibration set from Heartfelt industries, which is easier to use.

Unless you are willing to spend major bucks on an analog hygro, they all are crap that needs to be trashed.

Re: Hygormeter in the firdge

Don't be so sure there isn't much humidity in a fridge. 65% RH @ 55 F is about the same as 33% @ 75 F. A very broad generalization is that relative humidity increases as temperature decreases. [Now I'm going to run and hide before the resident RH guru comes in here to beat me with a textbook]

If you want to see the RH plummet, put your hygrometer on the kitchen table (unless you're in a southern state with no AC).

.
It depends on the preparation of the humidor, the temperature in your house, time of year. Once you know that the hydrometer is working properly, then begin the process of properly aging the humi. You may wish to search the CS site for the proper method to age the humidor properly so you give it a good start.

If you put it in the freezer/fridge and it wont go below 70, trash it. Its toast.

One day, years ago, I asked my dad what he used as a hygrometer in Cuba.
I still laugh to this day at the response I got but it was the method available in those days.

Here it goes:
Stick your hand in the humidor (which by the way, was a night table with no cedar and no seals), grab a stick, feel it.
Does it feel dry? Add water to the sea sponge that sits in the night table on a small bowl.
Does it feel too wet? Take out the sponge and remove some excess water from it.
Check back in a few days, repeat the above process.

And there you have it, the old fashioned way.

Re: Hygormeter in the firdge

I wouldn't even worry about a hygrometer in a 15ct humi. I would think that you'll be turning over your inventory pretty quickly. At least, quick enough that a few % difference in your humidity won't matter. Just grab the smallest tube of beads from Heartfelt at the RH you want, stick it in there and be done with it.

Which means I wouldn't worry too much about the results of the salt test on that analog. Especially since it doesn't seem to move much anyway The analog that came with my 100ct desktop hasn't budged off 45% from the day I bought it.

Anyway, that's just my thoughts, YMMV. Good luck!
