Re: Taking down my Walkin Humidor
Don't know if anyone has offered but if you need anyone to store those smokes for you while this is ongoing I am more than willing to step up to the plate...sometimes I surprise myself on my own generosity...
![]() Seriously though this one very cool project...hopefully I will be able to follow along and do this myself farther on down the road. Two coolers and a desktop humi already pretty full...was thinking of Vinotemp already. Thankfully my wife does not read the forums... ![]() |

Re: Taking down my Walkin Humidor
"BTW has anyone tried putting a vapor barrier between the green board and the cedar? If so, did you like it? It seems to me that putting plastic in there would somehow create moisture? Any help would be appreciated."
Don’t even try it as soon as you nail through that plastic it is no longer a moisture barrier. The main concern is the build up on mold in the walls of your home which will basically make your home worthless. Put the plastic behind the green/blue board and uses the proper adhesives to do so. In addition, where you put the screws through the sheet rock uses a bead of caulk or a sealing agent on the other side this may be a bit over kill but how many time do you really want to do this again? Also be sure to caulk the joints were the drywall meet corners the ground etc moisture is more likely to go around the through. Green board is a very good moisture inhibitor they even hang tile on and it, and is code in bathrooms in some areas so it should work fine. As far as skipping the sheet rock altogether that is a bad call, all wood expands and contracts with moisture and over time it will leak out in to the surrounding areas. Good luck with this project time for me to smoke some up! |

Re: Taking down my Walkin Humidor
I'm having a lot of problems finding led lights or Xenon that will work. Most of the ones that I've come across are battery operated. Is halogen really that bad? It seems like all the track lighting are for halogen only. What about halogen on a dimmer switch?

Re: Taking down my Walkin Humidor
No, it's not. The only bad thing about it is that halogen light do generate lots of heat, but if you're not planning on having the lights on continuously, it's no biggie. It does require a minimum safe distance between the lamp and your cigars, though.

Re: Taking down my Walkin Humidor
LED lighting has a long way to go before it reaches affordable practical application. Think along the lines of solar power. It can be done but the cost is pretty steep. Some of the technology looks similar to standard bulbs but depending on the application, produce less than optimal results. Swap in LED lights for MR-16 (low voltage, looks like a cone with a shiny reflector) run about $20-30 each.
The output however, is minimal compared to what you are replacing. A high output LED light with 3 x 1watt LED lights will produce about 100 lumens. That is equal to 1/4 the light intensity of a 40 watt standard bulb! Or, about 1/9 of a 50 watt MR-16! In addition, the effectiveness of a light bulb is aided by the reflector of the bulb itself or the fixture it is placed in. Most LED swap ins for track lights have fancy outer shells, however, the reflector is nowhere near effective enough to equal that of an MR-16. What does that mean? The effective light output will cast roughly 2'-0". Beyond that distance, the output is reduced by 50%. Bottom line, you MAY be happy with swapping in LED lights, but don't expect the same light intensity with the same number of light bulbs. If you do use LED, I'd suggest a warm white or anything rated at roughly 3000K (Kelvin) as this would be more complimentary to the appearance of your cigars. |

Re: Taking down my Walkin Humidor
Xenon is closer to halogen than it is to LED. It has a long life (6000-10,000 hours) but will generate heat equal to halogen.

Re: Taking down my Walkin Humidor
the flourescent floods available for cans produce very little heat and a decent light output at color temps that are acceptable. Food for thought.

Hey thanks for your input. I was thinking about doing this but then I found this site. He shows some cigars that apparently changed in appearance from the lighting. http://tobacconistu.blogspot.com/200...-part-iii.html The halogen lights that I bought also have a UV filter on them as well. So I guess that will help. Also I figure with the dimmer and the fact that I'm not going to leave them on for long periods of time.. I should be fine. It will be for the walk by in the night to see how they are doing in there. ![]() ![]() |

They have the UV filters too, I just forgot about them. I have also noticed since reading this thread that most shops I frequent use the exact same lights that I have, and they leave theirs on all day. Of course you'd think they would turn their product over a little more frequently than I do, so that may be the reason I never notice any discoloration on their cigars. Sounds like you're making some progress, looking forward to see the results. |

Hey thanks for checking it out. Yeah, I'm getting there. I picked up the insulation today and now I'm going wait for a friend of mine to install the drywall. I guess tommorow I'll work on getting the cooling unit set up. A couple more cuts and some studs should work the trick.... I miss having my humi ![]() |
