Poll Doesn't Figure

I don't get it. The recent CrazyFool poll says, out of 53 people, 70% favor maduros (results below). I know this is a pretty small sampling of the cigar smoker universe but it really doesn't figure

Maduros 38 71.70%
Cameroon 7 13.21%
Conn. Shade 3 5.66%
No preferance tit tall 5 9.43%

This poll has to be very misleading, because I've never been in a cigar store that showed more than about 35% maduros on the shelf. So, what does it mean? That maduro smokers respond more often to polls, or what? The results seem so out of balance I feel like I'm missing something here.

Re: Poll Doesn't Figure

I think it's a result of the sample. The people who frequent this board tend to be experienced cigar smokers who enjoy more full-bodied cigars. For that reason, given a choice between a maduro and a Connecticut shade wrapper, all else being equal, most will choose a maduro. If you polled every person walking into a B&M, you'd likely see a very different result.

Exactly. It is a statistical representitive of the people that frequent this board and most likely boards similiar but not all cigar smokers. I also think that croatan was correct in saying that most of us here "tend to be experienced cigar smokers"

Re: Poll Doesn't Figure

good point, and good question Mr. Maduro.... i would also think perhaps its the 'age' of all the Gorillas palates... being more carnasaurs we can all defifintly handle a full bodied smoke, so from there its weither we like it.

That and a developed palate opens flavors up for you, and Maduro IMHO, offers the widest range of sweet, salty and strange flavors

now im wondering if i ate enough for a nice Partaga black....

Bingo! I had wanted to post a thread on this phenomenon regarding bias on T25C toward heavier cigars, but never got around to it.

Generally, you'll find that the stronger cigars like ERDM tend to be preferred over lighter smokes like AF and Ashtons. Then, within a specific line of cigars, even getting down to the granularity of the SAME cigar, but offered with two different wrappers (AF 858 in Natural, Maduro or SG) the bias is always to the stronger flavor.

So I agree with Croatan, that it's absolutely a metric reflecting the "stogaholics" here. If you were to randomly take a poll of all smokers (not those who frequent boards like this, who tend to be aficionados) you'd get a different skew of data.

Re: Poll Doesn't Figure

Good thinking lads. I am proud to usenet among The Few, The Proud, The Maduro-eens.

As a leaner towards thicker, heavier, blacker, sweeter smokes I couldn't help but notice the gross deviation in this poll. I have not been a T25C/CS BOTL long enuff to know the taste-tendencies of participants here but I like the replies from the more experienced carnasaurs. One day I too will be a meat-eating Gorilla. Bueno.

Funny - yet another poll skewed to more mature taste of maduros - http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthread.php?t=16003

I like the word. Sounds like a meat-eating, Spanish speaking, monster.

It reminds me of my first wife.

Perhaps you meant Connoisseur?

(it's french for 'stuck up', named for King Connoisseur the IX who so mistreated his kitchen staff that during the revolution they executed him by inserting a large pylon from the city gate into his rectum - a punishment that in some parts of the world is still known as a 'Connoisskewereing.')

Re: Poll Doesn't Figure

I hang out at the local cigar store and, being a salesman at heart, even help out a lot. I would have to say that the bulk of the business a B&M gets is the periodic cigar smoker... less experienced and tending to prefer mild smokes.

My cigar store is going through a change in ownership right now and they have COMPLETELY sold out of all cigars... ALL of the milds were the first to go.

I thought it was "Con-a-sewer". I've been smoking cigars a long time and I'm just now starting to branch out and try different types. The Maduros I've tried were quite good but haven't tried many yet. I could see that being a preference some time in the future.
