Stogie Rate: database app

Hello all,

I am going to offer anyone that wants it, a copy of the software I developed for our team of Stogie Fresh raters (see pics below). I developed these runtime apps with Filemaker Developer. They run on Windows or MacOSX.

Besides being a database to store info about your stogies, these apps have links to the Stogie Fresh website and the SF blog posting area. Also included are the criteria used for rating cigars, humidors and acccessories, and informational pages on cigar types and wrapper types.

I usually put the software on CD along with scanned cigar bands and photos of cigars, but you will need to download them from the site (unless you want to walk by my house and pick up a CD). They are big files! About 17 MB.

If you want to download these files from the Stogie Fresh site, use the following URLs:
Windows version: http://www.stogiefresh.com/StogieRate_Win.zip
MacOSX version: http://www.stogiefresh.com/StogieRate_MacOSX.sitx

After unzipping the compressed files, look for the StogieRate.exe file in the directory (lots of files in there). For Mac users, it's the StogieRate file.

If you know how to play around with databases, you should have no trouble. I left a few records in the app so you can see how to use it. Other than that, no help files. No I don't provide tech support.

Also, unless you have Filemaker Pro, these cannot be tweaked. I would rather keep it that way. Have fun using these apps, if you have the knowhow, you can tweak for your own use, but please don't tweak for the purpose of distribution. These are copyrighted apps.

Somebody posted a thread that had a link to a database called Cigar Brief. I've been using that but I'll try this one. If it's better it should just be cut and paste. By the way, it sounds better be cause of the ratings links.

Weird.... I tried to download but it only downloaded a 217Kb file that will not open.

I'm on my laptop but on a LAN connection.... I'll try it later on at the house.

For those of you who have taken a crack at developing your own inventory shell, whether using Access, Excel or whatever, I forgot to mention that you could also look my database over and then use ideas to change your own tool. I know what it is like to develop something. You usually program in features that apeal to YOU. I, of course, did the same when making StogieRate, but I also had in mind a tool that would make it easier for Stogie Fresh Raters to transfer their ratings to the Stogie Fresh Blog.

ANyway, let me know what parts you find most useful and also what parts could be improved.

Finally grabbed it.... nice fast server you have there Doc.... took all of 39 seconds to grab it.

EDIT:

Hey Doc... is there an installer? I am getting "this application has failed to start because xerces.dll was not found. Re-installing the app may fix"

I'll re-download it and try again.

EDIT 2: Now when I download it I get a get a 3 Mb file, delete that and try again and then I get all 17.5 instantly and it will not open (deleted it too) and finally it did a real download but would not open saying it was not a valid archive.

I'll try later...

BTW... if you need a mirror or some hosting space I have a server here at home... my upload is only 500Kb.... the only downside (darn async-DSL! )

Make sure you open the StogieRate.exe file. Ther is another Stogie Rate file but it's not a selfrunning app.

Hey group,

I just posted a minor upgrade to the StogieRate app. Same URLs as before. This version gives you a couple more choices for looking at your data on the opening database page. No new functions but a better look and feel.

Re-downloaded it a few times and I keep getting the same error when clicking on the .exe

Sounds like the dll has to be registered on the OS, nothing major...

Another rather bizarre note is that I went to download the new version of the file just now and it DL'd it in 1 second.... I tried it again and it did a real download.

I just tried the most recent file and am getting the same error message
