Actually even without insurance you can require a sig I believe.

Yup, It's $ 1.80 online and $ 2.20 at the Post Office.

It can prevent heartache if you are shipping something valuable to someone who lives in a condensed area like an apt. that they leave packages in public areas subjecting them to theft. With this option they would leave a little yellow card telling the recipient where to pick the package up if they are not there to sign.
