Smoking my very first padron

After reading around here, and on the top25cigar webpage, I decided there were 3 cigars I needed to try in addition to the ashton vsg which I cant stop praising. One would be the Opus X, which my local shop does carry, but at 18 bucks per stick, it would have to be a pretty special occasion. So I picked up another ashton vsg robusty, and a rocky patel vintage 1990 torpedo for this evening.

But because my birthday was tuesday, I decided to also treat myself to a Padron anniv 64. Not sure which size, about the size of a robusto.

So Im sitting outside on my deck, in NJ, in 40 degree weather, with my laptop, and a Brooklyn Brewery chocolate stout, and I just fired up this Padron.

After reading around for a bit, I now know the names of what I taste. A bit peppery, but not a tobaco flavor at all. Very smooth. I am only about 1/5 of the way into it. The ash is a great gray/white shade, and it is burning very evenly. I must say, it is definately a good cigar....although it wish it wasnt so damn cold out.

At $13.50 it certainly isnt an everyday cigar, but for a nice change, I can see spending the extra green.

Hopefully tonight the Rocky Patel will treat me just as well. I know the Ashton will.

Welcome to the Jungle.

Those Padron anni's are really good. The regular Padrons are really really good too and not very expensive.

Lance,
Totally agree.
The regular line is a fine smoke at a fraction of the cost.
However, those Annis, what can one say that hasn't already been said.
Pure paradise.

To the opposite end of the spectrum, try the Padron Fuma's. At less than $2 a stick, can't be beat for that Paddy flavour.

Re: Smoking my very first padron

Welp, its finished. At first I was thinking, it was a good cigar, but maybe not my taste completely. I liked the peppery taste, but not as much as I like a creamy cigar. But by the end, I found myself not wanting to put it out. The stub that is left is no wider then a dime. If my neighbors had looked out their window they would have though I was smoking something else,....I was holding it with my two index fingers, trying not to burn my lips or fingers. Very good cigar. Definately left me wanting more.

Would I drop the cash to get another one,...probably not. I would however try the alternatives that have been recommended in this thread. I am glad I gave it a go, and dont regret it.

Or you can go to the other, opposite end of the spectrum with the Serie 1926 40th Anniversary Torpedo, $25-50 depending on the vendor. Yum.

I agree, $13.50 is a lot to spend on a cigar, especially if you smoke them often. I think you'll enjoy the RP based on your post. I find them the three you mentioned to be in the same general league.

I found that the 40th Anniversary Padron was really a letdown. For my money I much rather have the regular 1926 or 1964 lines. As for lance, was the 64 you smoked natural (light wrapper) or maduro (dark wrapper). Either way i would recommend the Padron 1926 Anniversary line.

I agree the price is way up there. I could smoke a handful of El Rey del Mundo (or a lot of other good cigars) for the price of a 40th Anniversary.

Re: Smoking my very first padron

I made sure to get the Maduro wrapper. I know that gets more favorable reviews on top25cigars.com

A friend of mine also recommended a 26 anniv. Maybe in a few weeks I can revisit the padron line and grab one of them.

Nice Lance. Starting in with the big boys. You keep experimenting like that you will have a cabinet Humi or coolador by Christmas.

Padrons 1926 #9 is one of my Favorite Padrons. They have their own distinct taste. Congrats on a good try.

Also Welcome to Club Stogie.

If you like the Padrons. Try to seek out a Fuente Anejo. Yum ! Yum !

Welcome to the Jungle, but your another one making feel both gratefull and guilty that I can smoke both in the house and at work. I appreceate a good cigar best sitting in front of the TV in my recliner. May everyone acquire that ability some day soon or at least some decent weather. It was 13 when I got up this morning.

Don't bother Lance.... if you want one of those just ask Richard directly... he has usually bought what was made. He didn't get that user title for nothing

Re: Smoking my very first padron

I had an aged Padron 2000 (2+ years old ) gifted to me by Mocobird that was very reminiscent of a "fresh off the truck" Anniversario.
