I've never been able to get a nice toast from matches. I've started to carry around a torch lighter for that reason.

Picked up a box of sulphur-free cigar matches that are about 3-times the length of a regular match that do the trick nicely without burning my fingers.
They look similar to this:

I only use the big kitchen matches,,what I do is roll the cigar and at the same time twist the match forward and backward with my fingers..Works everytime and I get a good light with one match.
