Amsterdam's new smoking ban
Don't know if this should be in legislation or not, but since it doesn't actually affect the majority of us, I figured it was more just an interesting story for all.
Heard on the radio that Amsterdam is going to institute an indoor smoking ban. The kicker? This won't affect their weed lounges unless someone rolls any amount of tobacco in their joints. That's right, weed OK in amsterdam, tobacco not. Something doesn't seem right about that.

Re: Amsterdam's new smoking ban
That makes no sense at all. Wacky Tobaccy but none of the regular stuff. I don't get it. I have no problem with any smoking at all, but to only ban one type. That's madness. I guess weed will stay unaffected because it brings so much money to the city.

Time for Amsterdam to take a tolerance break.

Re: Amsterdam's new smoking ban
Amsterdam actually has little choice in the matter. EU policy supports smoking bans. The articles I've read indicate that it is EU law though I can't find any record of a continental ban passing.

Re: Amsterdam's new smoking ban
I think the weed establishments are a sacred cow. They bring people from all over the world, if not to experience them, to at least see them.
If the numbers were available, I'm sure they are a huge boost to the local economy. I can see the reasoning pretty easily. Anti-smoking sentiment is huge everywhere. Pro-weed sentiment is obviously very widespread in Amsterdam. On the surface it sounds silly. Looking at the whole picture, I don't think it's contradictory at all. I'm sure it isn't to them.

Re: Amsterdam's new smoking ban
That sucks, 'cause I like to chain smoke Marlboro reds whenever I am hitting the bong.

I don't ever plan on going to Amsterdam, but I just thought the rule was pretty stupid. Never touched the stuff.

Re: Amsterdam's new smoking ban
I find a few bongs before work helps my concentration when administering field sobriety tests to drunk drivers.

Re: Amsterdam's new smoking ban
I will relay this information to my friend who will be traveling to Amsterdam in a few weeks. I find it very odd that they would ban tobacco but allow weed.

Re: Amsterdam's new smoking ban
I'll be visiting A'dam in August. I grew up just an overnight ferry ride away and I visited the city several times in my youth. This time will be a bit different: I will be accompanied by my 80yo mother, my 14yo daughter and her 14yo cousin. I am not expecting to spend much time in the coffee shops this time around, but there's a ton of other things to do in the city: the Van Gogh museum, the museum of Modern Art, the Ann Frank house, a boat trip on the canals, hiring bikes and riding around, etc.
I told my daughter to use google to search for things she might like do while we were there. I warned her that the city is well known for legal marijuana and prostitution. "Wahoo!" she cried. I think she was joking...

Re: Amsterdam's new smoking ban
Oh wow, I was worried when I read the thread title, but relief has set in knowing that the beloved Maui Wowi will not be affected by the ban. I just about lost all my senses of control, I would hate to know what would happen to the world if Acapulco Gold could not be enjoyed in the free society of Amsterdam. Sure makes one reflect on life doesn't it? |

Re: Amsterdam's new smoking ban
Oh Europe, what a shame. Didn't they recently ban outdoor smoking in cafes in Paris as well?

it's all politics. Someon on TV explained the whole situation and in order to ban the smoking of 100% weed cigarettes in coffeeshops with the current set of laws they have to officially legalize weed (which isn't the case, altough hardly nobody knows that) and the European parliament will never allows that to happen.
