Re: Do you leave your cigars in cellophane or take them out?
Here's is my favorite bit of information that comes to mind whenever this question arises.
Cellophane was invented in 1908 by Jacques E. Brandenberger, a Swiss textiles engineer. It is a thin, transparent sheet made of processed cellulose. Cellulose is a polysaccharide. It forms the primary structural component of green plants. Mostly cellulose fibers from wood, cotton or hemp are used for making "cellophane". However, the use of the word "cellophane" has been genericized, and is often used informally to refer to a wide variety of plastic film products, even though not made of cellulose. For me it is a very good thing that most of the cigars that I buy are protected by an essentially plant based wrapping as opposed to some polymer or monomer that could potentially be broken down by the oils of the cigar causing some molecular migration of said plastics into my cigars. I suspect that the use of the word "cellophane" when it comes to cigars is in the strict sense of the word (plant based in origin) and hopefully not being used in the generic vernacular...On it stays, but I do carefully remove it for photos, then carefully place them back on before I bed them down. —Richard PS I just went through a list of threads concerning this subject and added the tag "cello" to them. Hey kids, tags are our new friends!

Re: Do you leave your cigars in cellophane or take them out?
I always use to take them out, but now I'm doing most of my smoking at the b&m so I've been trying to keep nothing but premos in my desk top so now I leave those one in since they obviously represent a significant investment. Especialy since I'm a college student.

Keep them in cello unless they come without it.

If they come in cellophane I leave them that way, but I take the paper liners out of the boxes when I put them in Vinodor storage.

Some come with it on some without. I take it off some that I know I won't be handling. They look so good!

Re: Do you leave your cigars in cellophane or take them out?
When I had a small humidor I used to leave them on for the simple fact that I didn't want one cigars taste/oils/etc affecting another. I mean some of my sticks smell like horseshite, while others smell like cognac. I would use wrapped cigars to separate un-wrapped ones. I would also open the ends of the wrapper to allow them to breathe. Since getting a cabinet humidor, I have the luxury of grouping my cigars better (by region, etc) and no longer care about leaving them wrapped.
Mind you, leaving them wrapped helps take care of them if you want to throw one in your shirt pocket before going out. |

Re: Do you leave your cigars in cellophane or take them out?
The first box I got I took them all out because I heard something about them blending and creating a smoke of its own when stored with other stogies. I don't know how true that is and then I heard that they age better in the cello so I just started leaving them as they come I figure they come that way just leave them alone.

Re: Do you leave your cigars in cellophane or take them out?
I have searched on this subject and saw the last post with a poll was from 2005....Im sure this website has grown a ton from 2005 till now and wanted to revisit the subject with a poll.
I already have made my decision with cello and voted accordingly....I take them out of it for my humi....If I have to carry them anywhere I have tubos and 2 finger leathers to carry them in

Re: Do you leave your cigars in cellophane or take them out?
I take them off. I mostly buy boxes so I store them in the original box (like the way CC's come). I find that they settle to the 65% humidity faster with the cello off.

Re: Do you leave your cigars in cellophane or take them out?
WOW :-0 Thanks for that info Richard!!
I had been keeping mine in the cello because it kept them from getting damaged when handling and I learned from this board that cello breathes, so I was confident in leaving the cello on. Now after reading your reply I am even more confident that leaving the cello on IS THE CORRECT CHOICE!!
