Wrapper slipting after lighting up??? HELP!!
Hi Guys,
I just receive a new order from Atlantic cigars, 2 boxes of Oliva O serie (double toro, 60x6). When they ship it to Montreal it takes about 5 days to receive them. As soon as my cigars arrived I have put them in my humidors, wicth is about 70 dergres and 70% humidity. I fired up 2 of them in the first 2 days and both of them have slip after lighting them. after about 5 minutes of smoking it starts and it slips only the wrapper for about 2-3 inches. What's the problem??? Did they arrive to dry??? What should I do to correct the situation? I keep them in the cello, so i'm worried they will all do that. Comments badly needed here! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

sounds like they need alittle more rest, 2 days is not enough for having to make that long of a trip.

![]() Are they slipping out of your hand? I hope you mean splitting. If so, give them a few more days and try them again. |

They were shipped wet. Plus, 70% is way too wet. Try storing them a little lower and I'll bet you'll like all your smokes better.

Re: Wrapper slipting after lighting up??? HELP!!
coinsidering that your cigars are fresh, they might be too wet...
if your cigars are too wet, you light it up the cigar begins to expand and crack...

What they said! Try letting them rest for couple of weeks at around 65%

Re: Wrapper slipting after lighting up??? HELP!!
Totally agree. As a rule of thumb, anything shipped from the States (circa 5-7 days shipping), rests for at least the same amount of time in the humidor before consuming. I'm sure there are many opinions on what causes splitting, however, the only sticks that split on me (or unwrapped for that matter) were caused by high humidity.

Re: Wrapper slipting after lighting up??? HELP!!
I always keep my RH at 65% and let all shipments sit for at least a week. Since I changed to 65% RH I have had virtually no bad draws, no mold and no splitting wrappers or other construction issues.

Hey guys me again, I sure you guys are right, but I stopped smoking the last one and opened it up. The wrapper feels dry to me, but the filler was very wet! Is it normal to hear the cigars crack when you roll your fingers on it before lighting up??? I always thought that was a sign your cigar was to dry! Thanks for your help guys, Highly appreciated! |

Re: Wrapper slipting after lighting up??? HELP!!
Just to add another factor, I live about 25 minutes from Atlantic. It has been extremely humid here for the last week. So humid that when I open my humidor, the humidity rises.
It's possible they need more time to rest. That said, the last few cigars I've smoked have had cracking problems. I'm still trying to figure out if its my humidity in the humidor or out.

What you described makes perfect sense and is in line with what we thought - the cigars are too wet. The fact the outside is dry and inside is still wet means you haven't let them humidify properly yet. When you smoke a cigar like that the wet part expands and cracks the dry outter layer (i.e. wrapper). It is definitely NOT normal to hear the cigar crack when you feel it up. In fact doing so may have been part of the probelm. If the wrapper was dry, and you squeezed it enough to hear it crack, you've essentially killed the stick. If it doesn't unwrap, it might pull air from the cracks be just as shit a smoke as if it did unwrap. Sounds like they'll be fine with a little more rest. |

As others have indicated, letting the cigars rest will permit the wrapper to moisten and the filler and binder to dry. Once this balance or equilibrium is reached, your issue will be resolved and you will be far more likely to enjoy your smokes.
At least that has been my experience thus far. When I was keeping my sticks at 70% RH, I had similar issues. Since I've dropped the RH to 63-65% RH I've had much better smoking experiences. ![]()
