Shipping in the heat

The temperature around here is reaching the mid 90s these days. The highs will soon be in the triple digits with lows around 80. What extra steps do I need to take when shipping in this weather?

Thanks,
Rob

Re: Shipping in the heat

Either freeze whatever comes in or at a minimum quarantine any new purchases for a couple months.

Just ship the cigar in a plastic baggy or something that is air tight.

I know this has been asked a million times, how does the freezing process go? How long in the fridge/freezer then back from freezer/fridge?

Does this affect flavor or anything?

1 day in the fridge
2-3 days in the freezer
1 day in the fridge

Double bag the sticks

No, it does not. They taste just fine after they re-acclimate in the humidor.

Correct me on this:

The whole purpose behind freezing the cigars is to get the core of the cigar down below the necessary temperature to kill any eggs already in the leaves.

From what I understand it, in order for 3 days to be sufficient, the core temp of the cigar has to reach 5 degrees F.

The problem as I see it is this: What kind of household freezer can bring the core temperature of a cigar down to 5 degrees F?

I know that if I attempted to crank my upright freezer down to subzero (assuming that's even possible), my wife would shit a brick since all the ice cream in there would have the consistency of granite.

I'm thinking that given the typical home freezer is around 20 to 25 degrees F, it would take closer to about 3 to 4 weeks before you can be sure to have killed all the eggs.

Another tip...when shipping a bomb, trade. Pif, etc., to another member, try to ship it on a Monday through Wednesday. If you ship on Friday or Saturday, it will spend an extra 24-48 hours over the weekend in warm conditions whereas it will arrive in 2-3 days Priority earlier in the week.

Really? I am wondering if I am goofy now, my freezer side of my side by side refrigerator/freezer is kept between 0* and -3*....is that not the norm?

Re: Shipping in the heat

What about sticks that are coming out here to the sandbox where they spend at least a couple days at 110deg+ ?

And how long does it take the eggs to hatch and the little buggers to show?

Haha, not if you want to actually be able to scoop any ice cream from that freezer. I mean without a hammer and chiseal.

Unless you mean 0 degrees Celsius.

To be completely honest, I never actually measured the temperature in my freezer. I'm merely going by what my wife stated (and since she's a molecular biologist I tend to trust her on things like that).

But based on my own research, it's:

32F - 2+ months.
23F - 3 weeks.
14F - 5 days.
5F - 3 days.
-4F - 1 hour.

NOTE: Those are core temperatures, not surface temperatures. Meaning at those surface temperatures, you may need more time.

I really should get one of those weather thermometers and toss it in the freezers just for shits and grins.

Surprisingly enough, probably never.
At 120+F, the little buggers die in just a few hours.

As a side note: Anyone know why we can't just microwave the little bastards and be done with it?

OK, curiousity got the best of me, and I went and checked out my refrigerator/freezer, a GE Profile.

Manufacturer's recommended temperature setting for the freezer: 0*F

Current temperature: 0*F

I'm not crazy.

I have had no problems thus far with cigars being sent out here. For those few of you I have shipped cigars to, please let me know if there is anything more I need to do.

When I get cigars, I do let them rest in my coolerdor for at least a few weeks before lighting up.
