Which ones did you try? I'm interested to know so that I can stay away from them. All of them are not bad. I've had one or two that were, yet I don't know what kind they were. The ones i've mentioned and others that have been mentioned aren't bad, you just have to get the right brand. There are so many types of alts out there that all of them can't be good.

I don't know. We are going back 8-9 years ago now. I've tried maybe six different ones, and they were all inferior quality. I remember one was def an Ashton copy that tasted nothing like an Ashton, and more like a bunched up newspaper. Another was a Fuente something which was no good either. The others, I just don't remember. But after six bad ones, why would I keep trying them?

That is all you need to know about the JR Alternatives. Supposedly, some of them are seconds of the actual brands. I believe that is true for the Perdomo alternatives, but I am not sure about some of the others.

If you are looking for a budget smoke, there are lots of good choices already listed. The TNT stuff is very good as are the Famous Nic 3Ks.

I've heard that but don't know if that's true or not.

They have changed quite a bit in that time. I remember trying some back around 1999 - 2000 and thinking that they were god awful. Then last year I gave them another shot and found them to be pretty good, especially for the price.

Some of the Dominican alts are very mild and bland. But like I wrote if you stick to maduros especially Rocky Patel alts and Cuban Edicion Limitada alts you'll get a good smoke for the money.

Actually I wrote on my blog that I think the RP Edge maduro torps may be the same cigar. Rolled in the same factory, same look/feel, very similar taste profile/strength, etc.

But obviously to each his own. I'm not a fan of the bundled Olivas that many others love.

Re: JR Alternative Lines

So we know that Ashton alts & Fuente alts are a bust. Stay away. Any other bad ones?

Re: JR Alternative Lines

Tried the Cohiba Siglo IV alt just now. It's still in need of some rest in my humi, but I see some potential in this stick. A little too peppery right now, but after some rest I know that distinct flavorful sweetness I picked up will come to the forefront. I'll keep the rest for at least a month before I smoke another.
