JR Alternative Lines

I've recently been looking around at JR cigars and saw their listing of Alternatives. Any of these good? How do they compare to the "real deal"? What about their cuban alternatives?

Thanks for the responses.

Most of them are pretty good, and they really are a good alternative if you can't afford the real thing. Do a search on them here on the forums, I actually had a thread about this same thing a couple months back.

Re: JR Alternative Lines

To me, they're not worth the money. I've tried several in the JR alternative line and didn't like them. You would be better off smoking a good Padron for a similar price!

I'm not so sure this is a fair comparison given the price points of each cigar. Although I have not ever smoked a JR Alternate, I think the better comparison would be to another bundled cigar such as Flor de Oliva. If you are looking a for cigar that delivers damn good value, I would recommend Flor de Oliva. I'm always reluctant to pull the pin on a bundle of cigars because I am worried that I will not get around to smoking them.

Famous Nicaraguan 3000 - (NICARAGUA) Click here for other smoker's reviews of this brand

For the money, one of the best-tasting Nicaraguan cigars ever produced - boxed or bundled! Handmade by one of Nicaragua's top tabacaleras, Famous Nicaraguan 3000 cigars present a full-bodied and smooth-smoking cigar blended with diverse Nicaraguan tobaccos pressed inside dark, mouthwatering Ecuadorian Habano wrappers. The flavor is spicy, earthy, complex, and not overpowering. Plus, these cigars are NOT seconds. Hard to believe when you look at the price, but one taste will convince you. Re: JR Alternative Lines

I've tried quite a few of them.

I enjoyed the RP Edge maduro, Cuban Monte #2, all of the Cuban Edicion Limitadas, and the Excalibur maduros.

Those are all quite good for the money and fairly good sticks in terms of body and flavor.

Most of the natural stuff is just bland so if you are going to go for it pick a maduro.

Re: JR Alternative Lines

There is better stuff to be had for just a bit more money. Flor de Olivas which were already mentioned is one example.

Re: JR Alternative Lines

Thanks a lot gorillas, I was going to post how I tried 2 different JR alternatives, cohiba robusto & monte #2 and thought they were so so. But a few of you mentioned Flor De Olivas, so I did a search and now I have to buy some. I just filled up the last remaining space in my cooler with Sherpa's "I HAVE NO MORE ROOM" does this slope have no foothole or small rock outcropping? I just want to stop for a breather LOL. I should have a guess my credit card balance contest RRrrr....grumble grumble

I don't like them. I think they all taste the same and I would not recommend them.

Re: JR Alternative Lines

I went in and bought 5 different ones (regular JR Alternatives, Cohiba, Punch, and a couple others) several months back and like a fool I didn't mark them or anything to remember what was what. Smoked them, liked 3 of the 5. Couldn't say what 3 I liked though because they all have the same band. Tried 2 of the Cabinet No. 40's and thought they were actually pretty good for the price. Just me though

I think they make the best alternative cigars on the market.

I think most of their alternatives are as good or better then anything else out there for the money.

I havent found any of them to be close enough to the real thing. Some that i have tried have been decent cigars, just not what they are trying to be.......

These are some decent sticks, just don't expect them to taste like the real deal. I like the Bolivar Corona and I just bought a bundle of Cohuba Siglo IV. Don't taste like Bolivars at all, but a good stick nonetheless. I'll let you know about the Sig IV when I smoke one this week. The Boli alts are better w/ some rest time.

Re: JR Alternative Lines

I have tried several of the JR Alternatives and found the construction to be poor. I don't believe I ever got one that had a good burn or a good draw. That, in and of itself, is enough to tell me to spend my money on other items.
