Out of the Hospital
Man did I screw up. On July 4th my brother called me over to do a little tree work around his yard. Being the helpfull brother I am I grabbed my ladder and chainsaw and went over to help. After eyeing the limbs he wanted trimmed and smoking a Oliva Series V(almost my last cigar)The last limb he wanted trimmed off was 30 ft. up and not expecting such a climb I didnt bring a harness(which I would normally wear) I tied the ladder off and made the climb and cut the branch off. When the limb hitthe ground it bounced back and hit the ladder with such force it (you guessed it) knocked me off. It all happened so fast the last thing I remember was thinking "OH $hit Im screwed". A trip to the hospital via Life Flight, 2 fractures in my neck, broken rib and a fractured clavical I'mluckyI got off with so little after hearing so many other stories. The moral of this story:
1) Smoke good cigars, ya never know when it will be ytour last 2)Pay someone else to risk their life on those dangerous cuts (or always wear a harness) I hope this experience helps others. Thanks, Tim |

Re: Out of the Hospital
good to hear you're back, I know from experience that bad luck lies around the corner when working on higher ground. My father fell from the ladder while cleaning the windows of my parents house and broke his back, had a fracture in his skull, a blood cloth in his brain and several broken ribs. My uncle fell of a platform while painting (he was a professional painter), broke his shoulder and his leg and my other uncle who works in construction fell of a roof and broke his arm and several ribs.
And they wonder why I have acrophobia ![]()

Re: Out of the Hospital
Holy crap! Glad to hear you are able to tell us about this story. That's a hell of a fall that could have been much worse. Hoping you make a speedy recovery and thanks for the reminder to stop hoarding sticks for that special occasion as one poor judgement could make it all a waste. Hope you feel better soon!

Re: Out of the Hospital
Welcome back from your near-death experience. Glad you survived and picked up some wisdom along the way. And this is why I try to avoid any work that involves climbing up on a ladder - I'm dangerous enough with both feet on the ground.

Re: Out of the Hospital
I'm a member of the "fall off the ladder club", too. Did it way back in March.
My back's still broke and I gotta get some metal installed before it's right. You and I are both damn fortunate.
