Re: Harsh / Bitter Taste and AfterTaste
My opinion is that you cannot just categorize "CCs" and "NCs" as far as flavor/taste/smoking experience goes. My recommendation is to make distinctions between what BRAND and COUNTRY you are smoking at any given time. Rate that. Don't buy into stereotypes like, "dominicans are mild" or "CCs are strong."
Cigars are made from tobacco. There isn't going to be a HUGE difference between countries. There are subtle differences, of course, and that's why some of us prefer certain blends/brands/countries vs. others. A NC making your mouth dry vs. a CC not making your mouth dry is not the question you should be asking yourself. You should say, why does "cigar x" make my mouth dry? Where is it from? What is it about the process of making this cigar that makes my mouth dry when I smoke it? The quality control in Cuba is much worse than the quality control in almost any other "major" brand name NC you can purchase...and the tobacco is richer in flavor, but that's about it.

Re: Harsh / Bitter Taste and AfterTaste
I don't know. My first CC was a Cohiba Siglo VI Tubo, and one of the distinctions I immediately made after smoking it was the lack of the "end of cigar gnarliness" that I had thought was just part of smoking. It returned slightly with the Montecristo #3 I smoked, but I failed to notice it on a Romeo y Julieta Romeo #2. Then, returning to the U.S. and my NC cigars, I notice it more than ever after smoking CCs. My RP 1992s, Oliva V Lanceros, AF anythings...it's just there, and the Cohiba totally lacked it. I don't mind it much, I still love my cigars, but now I'm left needing to gargle Black Velvet now and then while smoking or after smoking.
Just saying, I think there's at least something to the idea. |

Re: Harsh / Bitter Taste and AfterTaste
I know what your talking about... I will say some NCs leave that heavy after taste and dry mouth and others don't. I love Cameroon wrapped sticks for the most part. For me the Carlos Toranos 1916 was a good flavorful cigar but left my mouth dry and that harsh taste you were talking about for 2 days. Same with the Nub Cameroon this week and the 5 Vegas Gold I smoked last night and most AFs do the same.
Not all sticks do that to me, R&J en Tubos, H. Uppman Vintage Cameroons, etc. Never tried to figure out the reason. As noted in another post, trying to figure out the country of origin and maybe the fillers would help out????? Quote:

I'm always happy when things turn out on a positive note. I'm sure your friends, relatives, & S.O. were collectively relieved about the improvements in your appearance.

Re: Harsh / Bitter Taste and AfterTaste
I truely belive it's simply the fact that cigars are made from a natural product. No different than eating oranges, most are sweet but every now and then you get a sour or tart one. Mother nature produces the tobbacco leaves (God bless her) and even though the cigar producers try to inspect every batch some "ducks" are going to get through. I think some cigars are just bad from the start due to a bad leaf used as a filler or wrapper. After that I think some cigar companies are just using cheaper products to compete in an ever growing market.

Re: Harsh / Bitter Taste and AfterTaste
I've experienced this with quite a few NC's but never a NC maduro. This is the main reason I almost solely smoke maduro's I never get a bitter/harsh taste from them. I'm neither a scientist, cigar roller, or master cigar smoker I just know what tastes like crap and what does not.

Re: Harsh / Bitter Taste and AfterTaste
I had the same problem with both CCs and NCs. My solution to get rid of the harshness is dry boxing.
I store all my cigars at 68% humidity and this is perfect for aging, and I never have any problem with molds. However, I find that after storing them for more than a year, some of them will taste harsh if you smoke them right out of the humi. What I usually do is I pick several sticks that I want to smoke next week in a small desktop humi without any humidification device. After about 3 days, I will smoke the ones that are drier than the rest (pick the ones that are not too moist). You will be surprise how much better your cigars taste. Try this method out and let us know if it works for you. |
