How to Explain Cigar Smoking to a Non Smoker

So the other day I was fishing on a river, and thought "what a perfect moment for a cigar." So I indulged the senses and lit up a DPG Cuban Classic. Pretty soon, I was looking at the smoke carelessly drift down wind, right across a young guy's very aggitated looking face. I excused myself, reeled in my line, and moved so that the smoke wouldn't even come near him. He started giving me the usual- "Don't you know that $hit isn't good for you", "they smell horrible", and then the big question came out. "What is it about cigars that makes you want to smoke them?" I started to explain to him the benefits of cigar smoking, but realized that all the explanations I was dishing out wasn't going to change his mind. Instead I stopped, and told him to go out buy a good cigar, and just try it.

What's your way of explaining cigar smoking to a non smoker?

i just say it tastes good, is relaxing, and i really enjoy it; and tell them they should try it or give them one, if they dont like it, too bad... i still do

To quote Ric Flair 'If ya don't like it, Learn to love it!. But honestly I haven't run into the problem since i began to smoke cigars with my buddies who all enjoy a good cigar on the weekends

I just say "It's something I choose to do. I enjoy it and thats all that matters". It's just too hard to try and explain why we like to do things to others that are convinced it's wrong already.

In the scenario you described, I wouldn't bother. What can be gained? Try to prove that tobacco isn't a known carcinogen? Kill a good stick and a fine moment for me to placate this guy and make him even bolder the next time?

I'd smile and tell him I'm sorry my smoke is bothering him, then move up or downstream in a show of consideration. And that's all I'd do. It takes all kinds. His kind isn't a smoker, and nothing wrong with that. Our kind is, and nothing wrong with that.

By the way, If I'd selected the spot first, I might even consider it "my" turf and although I'm not in the business of making enemies, if I didn't really want to move, or if I thought the spot was working as far as the fishing was concerned, I would probably be less inclined to move at all. But I don't looking for fights if I can avoid them at all.

Well I agree and disagree. Did he set up after you started smokeing? I would say not. You did the right thing and showed class to get up and move. Thats why guy like us that enjoy a good cigar, to relax,the same thing that guy should have done!

Normally I just ignore people with those comments, but if it gets worse I just tell people I'll die doing what I like to do. I'd rather die having fun than being boring and never trying anything.
