I always use a torch lighter and my fingers have the burn marks to prove it.

Have you really burnt yourself with one?

I haven't yet, but I imagine it would get ugly REALLY fast.

Yes I have many times over the years. I like to smoke in my Jeep. So with one hand on the wheel with a cigar in it the other with a torch lighter in it you obviously have to pay more attention to the road then where the torch is aiming and sheet happens. Ouch! Never too seriously though.

I use a vector triple flame since I smoke outdoors most of the time. One of my local b&m's sells cedar strips that when you light your cigar you get a nice flavor with. In a perfect world I would use these every time.

Me local B&M sells some too and I must say...way better than anything as far as taste goes.

If you buy cigars by the box, you will notice that all the b&m did was to break up the cedar sheets that some makers use to separate layers of cigars. I keep a bunch of these sheets and break some up when I want to get fancy. It does make for a nice flavor and I enjoy doing it on days when it is not too windy outside.

Re: Lighter or Matches

I use either a Ronson torch or a Bernz-o-matic soft flame utility lighter. Both are less than $5.00 and can be refilled. However, if you want to a unique experience you can try the Three Match Method.

At the end of the day, whatever lights your stick.

Re: Lighter or Matches

I prefer my soft flame, makes lighting feel more part of the ritual. But if its windy I use my jet.

Sulfur burns blue. It is literally gone before you get the match inches from the box you used to light it. You would have to move EXTREMELY quick to actually get any sulfur.

Torch lighters burn too hot. To me they are like using jet engines between red lights on a city block... it is just way overkill. I don't want to shoot fire flames deep into the cigar I just want to light it. I always enjoy a cigar more if it has been lit in a slower and more careful way. Of course a torch requires less skill and gets it done much faster but that does it make it best.

My 2 cents.

Re: Lighter or Matches

I will use a matech from time to time, but I usually go with the torch lighter becasue of the wind. I use LAVA fuel in my lighters which is is a 5X refined fluid. I think I am going to go out and ligh up a cigar with a cedar strip after what I have heard here. I have never done it, but I would like to see what the difference it from matches and Butane lighters.

Re: Lighter or Matches

I just lit a Torano Exodus 59 (a smoke I am very familiar with) with a strip of cedar. I don't notice much of a flavor difference, but I did get a great aroma off the cedar when it was burning. I think I will be doing it more often.
