Frequency of opening humidor in cooler temperature

I have a brand-new humidor, with brand-new cigars to match lol. I'm using a Cigar Caddy and a Boveda packet, and I let everything settle up for a day or two inside, since I'm worried about the proper environment, that sort of thing.

It's a little cooler in my room, so I keep opening and closing my Caddy to look at the bands so I can gather info about each online, try to further my knowledge.

My question is, is it going to affect the tobacco any? I'm 99.8% sure that all of these cigars have been stored previously, as they were gifted to me, but I would hate to be their ruin. I highly doubt I'm hurting them much, but would love an educated opinion, or a thread link if available I did look first.

Thanks all- Kegan

Re: Frequency of opening humidor in cooler temperature

As long as you maintain a proper environment, opening it every once in a while should not be a problem and the humidor should recover in a short period of time

Figured as much, thanks newbie paranoia I guess. I wasn't going to unwrap them either, but my undeveloped nose wasn't smelling the leaf through the cellophane like everyone else's. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, this a truly fascianting little hobby you all have got here.

I open my humidor all of the time, I just love looking at my babies, though I do sometimes worry I'm hurting them by looking at them so much.

I love the smell of a well seasoned / stocked humidor!

From the 80's phrase "take a picture it'll last longer"...then you can have band info without having to keep opening if you're that concerned.

As long as you aren't seeig your hygro changing with every open, you're good.

No, I just looked the info up for each so I can post it here later. And *gasp* I didn't opt for a hygro, I figured that the Boveda should earn its worth soon enough.

Great idea -- you could have a pic of your bands open on the same computer where you are doing your research.

It's probably good to let a little air circulate through your sticks, anyway. I travel all week, and I find myself wondering around Thursday each week what might be happening in my boxes. Humidity dropping? Temperatures rising? Flavors blendng? Nothing?

Each Friday, things seem to be just as I left them. Delicious.

In the long run you will save time, money and effort by getting yourself some beads and a digital Hygrometer instead of buying Boveda packs over and over.

You can't go wrong with beads, and a Hygro will put your mind at ease. Just make sure and test your Hygrometer so you know it is accurate.

I would buy some 65% beads if I were you. They do all the work for you and you don't need to check them all that much.

I'll probably get a small hygro...as for the beads, for the time being, the packets are really cheaper. I don't yet have license due to medical reasons, and they need distilled water only, I'm told, which I would have to go out and buy, cart home to a dorm, and store in a small fridge.

Furthermore, I plan to replace my Cigar Caddy trays with sturdier ones, and will be removing the top foam to insert a fourth so it can hold more. As a result, there's no room for a bead puck.

Someday, when I have room enough, I may have a humi with a bead setup. Space is of the essence, being in college and all, and I hate to shoot down all these suggestions that I know are very effective.

Re: Frequency of opening humidor in cooler temperature

Think about it this way, cigars are shipped from vendor to retailer/consumer all the time outside of proper humidification. If they are out for days or even a week, they re-acclimate nicely. Opening the humi a few times a day will not adversely effect the cigars.

You could always go visit the bio or chem department for distilled water for beads. Just take a soda bottle over and ask nicely...maybe wink. I'm sure it will work.

Re: Frequency of opening humidor in cooler temperature

If you aren't a little paranoid in the beginning you don't love it enough. We were all a little silly when we set up our first humidor. In a few years you will look back and laugh. My one bit of caution is adding humidity to a humidor in the summer without any idea of whether or not it is needed.

Very true words. I remember opening my humidor just to get a whiff of the cedar. (of course, I still do that . . . )
