Beating NYS Smoking Bans!

So last night I call a good friend of mine to hang out at the usual bar we frequent. We both work in a couple restaurants in town so once you're in, you tend to know staff from 80% of the area's bars, pubs, and restaurants. We go to this one place because she knows a manager and I know the bartender and that's it. For us, that's a remarkably low ratio for staff acquaintance...we call it "The bar where we don't know anyone." Sometimes you just don't feel like 'talking shop.'

This is a new place with a great outdoor eating area that's fenced in. All three doors to it say "No smoking on the patio."

The two people we know are not working so I ask the waiter closest to us, "Hey, is there smoking on the patio?"

"Technically no. But there're only three tables hanging out there. I don't think they're care if you figure out which way the wind is blowing."

"Really? I have a cigar though..."

"Nah, it'll be fine. I really don't think anyone's going to ask you to stop."

So we order a glass of red, and Tanqueray on the rocks for me and I run to the car to grab my cigar. As I open the door I think to myself 'hmm..i should bring an extra..you never know what might go down...' So I pull an Indian Tobac maddie out of my caddy and slip it into an empty Sig VI tube.

We meet back at the outside table, I clip and light up. The guy two tables away is getting hit right in the face with my smoke, the wind shifted. He gets kind of agitated. I get worried, pull out the tube and set it on the table. There's no way I'm snuffing an '04 Upmann mag46. I hear him mutter.."Man, i wish I brought a cigar. I haven't had one in years."

I lean his way and say loud enough for him to hear me, "You want one?"

"Really?!"

"Yeah man, it's all yours." I slid it out of the tube (so he does't think he's getting a Cohiba), clipped it, and handed it to him with a box of matches.

He lit it up. I hear him say, "Man, now this is a GREAT night. I TOTALLY feel like a high roller!"

My friend looks at me and says, "What the hell was that?"

"Well, I figured if the guy closest to us got pissed that I was smoking, I'd give him a cigar and all would be well. Sort of a peace offering."

"Your mind works the way none others do, my friend." she replied.

I said, "Nope...that's the way a cigar-smokers brain just works. Share the love."

By halfway down the Mag 46, the whole patio was smoking. So much for NYS laws.

In NYS you are required by law to be 25ft from any designated eating area, even if outside.

Civil disobedience did indeed save the day!!

Nice! Way to spread the love and give a nice impression of cigar smokers everywhere. Truly a diplomatic solution.

I love it... that is exactly what should happen IMO... stupid laws created by stupid people...

I can't wait till they try to ban tobacco completely... I bet that will be a day they regret!
