Keeping em lit

I had a very nice LGC R last night and could not put it down. I keep my smokes stored at 65 % humidity so I don't think they are too wet, but I often have trouble when I get to the final few inches. It seems like a battle to keep them lit. Maybe I should try dry boxing?

Re: Keeping em lit

Towards the end between the moisture and tar build up, that's common to me as well. 4.5" out of 5 still makes for a good smoke.

Last night I was having same said problem with a WOAM from last fathers day and a 01 QdO Corona. I find it no biggy, I just take a torch to it and hit on it. Usually lights up again.

Don't sweat it.

I have never had this problem. Do you slow down on your "draw-rate" when approaching the end?

Are you purging as you smoke? That helps to keep the burn even as well as burn off the tar buildup.
I know some BOTLs that do it gently with every puff, and others that do the occasional power purge.

And no, there was absolutely no pnoon joke lurking in the background of this post.

No I don't, as strong as they can sometimes be at that point I maintain the same speed.

.
I usually do a couple power purges throughout the smoke. I tend to smoke strong cigars so I guess it's likely a tar build up issue. I don't hate it

Re: Keeping em lit

I only a purge a few times if that during a smoke, I never really have a problem as long as you keep smoking and not take like 5 minute breaks and such...dry boxing could help, or if you smoke in a higher humidty area such as outside when it just rained that will cause it to die out quicker

Re: Keeping em lit

purging : blowing back thru the cigar, w/ or w/o lighting the end 1st-just burns off the tar that builds up as you smoke

Re: Keeping em lit

Are you smoking them outside and what's the humidity in your area like this time of year? I tend to have this problem this time of year, but I smoke outside 99% of the time. I notice that by the time I get to an inch/inch and a half the cigar is more often than not pretty moist and if I let it sit for more than a minute usually burns out.

Wouldn't purging too often actually make it worse?
The moisture from your breath may end up making the filler more moist no?

And yes, I too find it hard to keep the last inch or so lit. But then by the time I hit that point, I've already enjoyed most of the cigar so if it goes out, I'm not all that upset.

As many here will attest I am check full of hot air, so perhaps I don't often suffer this malady due to the increased heat and dryness my purging causes?
I find that a regular soft purge tends to keep my sticks burning more evenly, but it could very well have to do with the ambient humidity of your smoking environment. Normally us desert dwellers don't worry much about over humidifying while we smoke, but with the recent humid air that has been blowing in from our neighbors to the East I have had a more difficult time keeping my sticks lit and burning nicely.

I generally smoke outside. I live in the high desert, hot, and dry.
