Looking for a new smoking buddy.

[SIZE=3]I saw a thread a few weeks ago from a man who just lost his old dog. I just unsuccessfully searched for that that post but maybe they disappear after awhile? I’m new here. Anyway I didn’t respond because it would have just a “me too” type sentiment. Today I wanted to let him know that I feel his pain, firsthand. Although dogs might be off topic to some, many of the best times of my life have been spent smoking cigars in the company of dogs. I also sense that I'm not alone in that sentiment.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]I got home from a weekend trip Sunday afternoon to find my beloved 13 year old[/SIZE]
[SIZE=3]Lab mix Dusty unable to stand on his rear legs. He had a number of health issues so I knew his time was near but putting him down last night was still painful. He was a very quirky dog [/SIZE][SIZE=3]with a lot of “personality” so he was a constant source of amusement & companionship. He will be greatly missed but we are consoled by the fact from the day that we rescued him from the pound in 95’ he never had a bad day, until yesterday.[/SIZE]
[SIZE=3]One of best qualities was his ability to hang with me & my other old dog, a golden, either on the patio or in the front yard. Upwind or downwind of my cigar he never complained, unlike a number of former wives. He was happy to just to be with his posse including my cigar smoke loving current wife. [/SIZE]
[SIZE=3]Last night after we returned from the vet hospital my wife & I (she’s taking it very hard) sat outside reminiscing. I had a nice Oliva G natural & a few fingers of Bushmills to ease my pain. It worked to some extent.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=3]I will be looking for a new dog soon. I feel the best way to honor him is to rescue another [/SIZE][SIZE=3]dog & give him a good life. With dogs there’s always inequity; you get a love more love back than you could possibly give.[/SIZE]

Sorry for the loss man. I lost my dog a year ago - he was the best dog you ever ask for and he was partner in everything, so I know how you feel.

My new dog was rescued, and we're still workin' hard on her, but it isn't quite the same.

I'm sorry for you loss...losing a friend is never easy...

I'm just starting to get used to my dog at just over a year old...and sometimes i think about having to say goodbye someday...and it already makes me a bit misty eyed...

Thanks for sharing and sorry for your loss. My 10-year-old Lab, Jake, is my smoking buddy. He doesn't particularly like cigars, but he enjoys my company and it's always an excuse for him to lie on the porch or patio. And I fear his best days are behind him. Anyway, best of luck finding your new budy.

Sorry for your loss. You are right it is appropriate here. One of my dogs loves the smell of cigar because he knows he will get lots of undivided attention while I smoke. The other dog is somewhat indifferent and best known for accidentally knocking the ashtray off the coffee table with her tail. The only time I don't let them hang around me while I smoke is when I am in the pool. They splash too much.

We also had to put our long time pet down this past spring. My daughter was a wreck for a few weeks. Hope you have many happy memories.

I'm saddened to hear of your loss...

Having lost my best friend ever after over 15 years with him, I feel your pain. My eyes still well up when I read posts like yours.

May you rescue or otherwise find another worthy companion. We now have two, both from the Arlington, TX animal service center. My life would not be the same without them. Dogs are the best example of unconditional love I have EVER had the pleasure of experiencing.

Nothing really helps that pain, but in time a new pal will help to make some new memories. It was a hard weekend for smoking buddies. Your's is the second one I heard about. I think I'll go hug my dog.
