Re: Cigar cutter confiscated at airport.

I now drive to where I am going unless it is cross country because I can not stand being treated like a criminal before I have done anything. That being said many of the TSA are not your sharpest pencils in the box but they have authority and power and I am sure they have the final say in what is dangerous even when it is not on their list. I had a friend that was travelling with her 3 children one way and they pulled her youngest who was 2 into the back for a complete search and would not let her and her other children come in.

I am sure it was awful for your grand daughter to loose a gift even if it only cost $2.

Re: Cigar cutter confiscated at airport.

I have never had mine confiscated either.

Even though I have travelled with it many times I decided to switch up from the metal cylinder travel humi to a herf. The metal cylinder just looks suspicious and it didn't really protect my sticks as well.

Did you know that you are not allowed to check safety matches? You are supposed to carry them on. Isn't that odd. I have mistakenly violated that rule more times than I can count. That is the opposite of what you think it should be.

you can't smoke on the airport, you can't smoke in the plane, so why would you have your cutter with you in your handluggage? I flew to London last week and back to Amsterdam and my cutter was safely in my luggage, no problems at all. Better safe then sorry.

So your contribution to the thread is that you have not had a cutter in checked baggage confiscated:

I like to keep my cutter with my cigars which I prefer not to be tossed around by a 500lb gorilla working in the luggage area. I don't normally take pictures on the plane either but when I have my digital camera I carry it on too. That is not hard to understand.

a digital camera is quite delicate, a cigar cutter isn't. Customs won't confiscate a digital camera but there are plenty of stories that they confiscate cigar cutters. Why take the risk if you can't use the cutter at the airport of plane anyway? For me it's hard to understand why you would take the risk.

In October they took my apple sauce away, I had it in my hand bag so I have what to eat on the way. I'm not kidding.

Re: Cigar cutter confiscated at airport.

I'm not sure if I trust putting my cigar cutter in with my checked baggage. Last time I traveled someone stole my Cameo I just purchased in Italy. Still makes me mad (sorry, for the rant!).

Some of us prefer to travel light and not check luggage. It's a lot quicker usually.

well, in that case you know you take the risk of losing your cutter to customs. And when you know you take the risk, you have to accept it when they confiscate it. Quite simple.

This was not customs. In the US we can travel from one state to another and take whatever we want to across the state lines(except some fruits in california) The point is, she was not traveling with the cutter in order to not smoke or to smoke, but to get it home from her birthday party and she had one small(2ft sq.) bag, And it is on the acceptable list. It is a security check, and I think that some things are obviously a threat to security and some things just allow them to be pains in the a$$.

I never intended for her to travel with an expensive accessory and planned all the time to mail the cutter and a torch lighter at a later date, so it is no big deal except for the unfairness of it and to point out the inconsistencies of the system.

It's an overreaction for sure. But those cheapie cutters usually come apart to reveal a box cutter type razor blade. Still bad memories of box cutters on planes.

Well it is listed as an acceptable carry-on item on their website. If it was listed otherwise I would fully agree with you.
