Dog Watch Social Club

I was listening to the latest Dog Watch Social Club yesterday as I drove around in the company vehicle, smoking a Cool Cat cigar that someone gave me after a trip to San Francisco, and started wondering how other people listen. I always listen on my Ipod, usually on my way to and from work on Monday, but what about everybody else?

Just curious.

Re: Dog Watch Social Club

In dash MP3-CD player in the car, burn the podcasts to rw-disc and listen on the drive to/from work. I also have a portable MP3-CD player (as does my wife and 7-year old) that I can listen to the discs with. Not terribly efficient for podcasts but it works. Hoping to upgrade my old Palm IIIxe to a Palm T|X which I would then use with a i-rock or other FM transmitter to listen over a radio frequency in the car or with headphones out of the car.

I hope you have better luck with the FM transmitter than I have. Mine works great in general but I can't get enough volume when I try to use it to listen to Dog Watch.

That is something I have noticed in general not using a FM transmitter. While listening to normal mp3 music I generally have the volume of the CD player in the mid range of a 00-98 scale but when listening to the DWSC I have to crank it up into the 80's for the spoken parts then turn it back down into the high 60's for the music parts of the show. I'm guessing the recording level of Bob and Dale's hardware is somewhat lower than what most music is recorded at. I know that some of the non free PC MP3 players have the ability to adjust the audio level of the files themselves which might help, If I have issues with the FM transmitter (when I get it) I'll look into it more.

Re: Dog Watch Social Club

Well, of course I listen to it several ways. I usually check it out from the site while at work on Monday mornings to be sure it got uploaded OK. I also download it to my iRiver that's always with me in case I run across someone who is interested but hasn't heard us yet.
Thanks for the feedback cmiller on the volume issue. I know Bob works hard to get it balanced, but the music always seems to come across louder then the voices. We'll keep working that.
Brother Jeb - thanks for the poll. We're always hoping most folks will subscribe to the feed to keep our bandwidth issues at bay. It will be interesting to see how this turns out!

I have switched to using Sony Sound Forge for the final processing but am still learning the trade. I appreciate the feedback. I will try something differnet with the Christmas Eve show and see if it works any better.

Bob-
I just finished listening to the Christmas Eve* show and whatever you changed seemed to work. I didn't notice any appreciable difference in volume between the conversation and the music.

Also, I don't know if leaving in the few minutes before and after the show was intentional or not but I liked it.

I personally listen to it on my iPod, while smoking on my porch (even if it is relatively cold out.) Good job guys, great show.

Re: Dog Watch Social Club

A couple of weeks ago I picked up one of those CD to cassette deck adapters that used to be very popular for use with portable CD players. It is by far the best way I have found to play my Ipod through my car stereo. I would recommend it over ANY FM transmitter that I have tried.

I use my Ipod to listen to them. It keeps me bst while I am watching my kids at gymnastics practice.

Great show. I liked the Shakespeare interview this week.

Check out the Dogwatch Social Club home page www.dogwatchsocialclub.com for the story! Breifly, it is one of the named watches on a sailing vessel. Bob & I named our show after it due to our love of sailing and the timeframe involved.
While you're there, if you haven't listened to the show yet, click on the "current show" button to catch the latest episode. We have an interview with Scott Shakespeare, president of Shakespeare Cigars.
