Re: De Facto Rating Scale???

Here is a rating scale from a CF poster, purosismoke:

Construction: 15 points
How did the cigar draw and burn? Soft spots? Wrapper patches? Any other issues worth mentioning?
…………………………………….

Appearance: 15 points
How did the cigar look? Were there too many veins? Wrinkles or stretching? Did the color look appealing? How is the cap?
…………………………………….

Flavor: 35 points
Did you enjoy the flavor of the smoke? Were there any particular, familiar flavors that you appreciated or did not enjoy? Was the finish (aftertaste) long or short, and was it pleasant? Did any flavors develop on the finish? Was the smoke harsh and rough, or spicy and smooth? Was the aroma of the smoke enjoyable? Were there any familiar aromas present in the smoke? Was the smoke cool or hot?
…………………………………….

Overall Appreciation: 35 points
Compare the other three categories and weigh their importance. Even though the cigar may have appeared rough and burned crooked, was the flavor extraordinary? Would you buy this cigar again? What is your personal opinion? Why? What did you drink while smoking? Take a guess as to what this cigar is or where it is from!

Total Score: ??

100-95 points: Classic, the best of the best
94-90 points: Outstanding
87-89 points: Very good to excellent
86-80 points: Smokeable, but why bother?

Re: De Facto Rating Scale???

From StogieFresh:

How we rate cigars

  1. LOOK AND FEEL: a great deal of enjoyment can be had from simply looking at a cigar. Is the wrapper oozing oils that make it look good enough to eat? Is the wrapper smooth, with tiny veins? Is it mottled in appearance with big chunky veins? Are there bumps, lumps and other markings? What about feel? Mushy, soft, supple or rock hard?
  2. FLAVOR AND AROMA: Flavor is always subjective, but we tell you what we like and dislike about the flavors and why. Is the cigar harsh, bitter, spicy, or bland? Does the character of the cigar change as you smoke it? Also, how does the cigar smell? Not just the smoke, but the wrapper too.
  3. BURN: A good cigar should not be difficult to keep lit or have too tight a draw. It should burn consistently, throwing an ash that that sticks together. The edges of the burning end should resemble a thin dark line and should not be thick and bubbled, which shows improper aging of the tobacco.
  4. OVERALL SCORE = LOOK AND FEEL(.20) + FLAVOR AND AROMA(.40) + BURN(.40) [NOTE: We weight flavor and burn aspects higher than the appearance of the cigar.]
  5. RATING STANDARDS: We use a 50-100 point scale.
    51 - 69 = POOR
    70 - 79 = AVERAGE
    80 - 89 = SILVER STAR
    90 - 100 = GOLD STAR

Re: De Facto Rating Scale???

From CA, no mention of how numbers are computed:

All cigars in the database are scored on the 100-point scale:
95-100 - classic
90- 94 - outstanding
80-89 - very good to excellent
70-79 - average to good commercial quality
below 70 - don't waste your money

My rating system:

Not very complex, but based mostly on how I enjoyed the smoke. I guess there's room for qualifiers such as, it tasted awesome, but had to be touched up every 2-3 minutes to keep it burning even.

It's also a relative scale with possible room for more +s and -s. So I rate the cigar on how I enjoyed the experience as compared to some others I've smoked. And although I appreciate a good looking cigar, appearance does not really matter.
