Thumbs up My RedSox at Yankees daytrip

Not sure if there is a forum for retailer reviews...

So my buddy gets us box seats on the right field line for Sox v Yanks last night... his treat! We had some time to kill since we arrived about 5 hours early, so we decided to take the train downtown. We walked around a bit and my buddy says to me "hey, you know any good cigar shops in town?"

Boy, did I! I had never been to either but I was very aware of both.

So my buddy whips out his iPhone and brings up google... first stop JR Cigar on 5th. You can see the giant MONTECRISTO marquee from a block away. The stop is very understated from the outside. Walk in and immediately get that wonderful B&M aroma. The whole place is basically a two floor giant humidor. What a great selection of smokes. The first floor is mostly premium brands with a few JR selections here and there. They also had accessories and loose tobacco as well as some machine made sticks.

Basement level was filled with bundled cigars. Mostly JR brand but others as well. They even had someone rolling cigars down there.

The staff was very friendly and there was some teasing back and forth between some of the staff and some of the "regulars". Definately a cool place to shop. No lounge to speak of, but I may have missed that part of the store if there was a third level. Picked up a couple MC, Counterfied Cubans and a half dozen different JR brands that I have been wanting to try. Good prices, I would definately go back.

Stop number 2... Davidoff of Geneva on Madison.

WOW.. Beautiful shop. Everybody is in suits and I felt VERY underdressed in shorts and a polo (im here for the game remember). One of the staff (Eric) greeted us very politely, presented his card, and asked how he could be of assistance.. I told him we were in town for the game and it was our first time in Davidoff. He showed us around the first level to where they had a section of accessories and then brought us into the humidor. Now while thier selection wasnt as extensive as JR they definately focus on quality vs quantity. They have a smoking area, but since it was getting close to game time and we were underdressed we decided against hanging out.

Eric asked my cigar tastes and recommended a few different sticks, most of which I had tasted or could find at my local B&M... I was here for the stuff that I couldnt find back home. Oliva Vs... I picked up two double robustos and two figureados... also a Aurora Preferido #2 and a robusto. Prices on both were actually less that I expected... close to what you would pay at an online retailer. I should also mention that WE felt underdressed, and were not made to feel this way by the staff or other patrons.

We passed by Nat Shermans but we were running short on time...

If you ever are in NYC and have the opportunity to visit either store I would highly recommend it. They both have great selection and wonderful service.

oh, and for the record the Sox slapped around the Yanks 7 to 3.

Awesome night!

I have to say though, its a bit sad saying goodbye to Yankee stadium. From what I heard from some NY fans the new stadium (right across the street) wont have as many seats... more luxury boxes.

Once again, they make it that much unaffordable to go see a game. A beer costs $8.50. Two hotdogs and two bottles of water cost me $20! I cant imagine what its gonna cost at the new stadium. Not that Fenway is any different...

Re: My RedSox at Yankees daytrip

When I was in NYC a couple weekends ago I did the same thing.

Davidoff shop on Saturday (in jeans and a tee shirt ). I bought a couple Davidoff and a PAM 26. The staff was very, very friendly and helpful. I was with my girlfriend and my parents. I swung by the shelfs with all the Zino humidors and I asked my mom how much she thought the crazy Madagascar one costs and she guessed $600. The price tag said $12,500.

Sunday my mom and GF went shopping a Sachs. I walked around and found the Nat Sherman shop. Nice little shop, the club lounge looked amazing but you didn't miss too much.

Then I stopped a JR's and had smoke while walking around.
I was a little uncomfortable at the JR shop as they constantly followed me around while I was looking. I understand they are trying to prevent shoplifting, but they could have at least had a short conversation with me so I didn't feel like a criminal.

The last shop I went in we found by accident (walked the wrong way to the subway). I can't remember what it was called or exactly where it was, it was maybe 6-8 blocks from times square. But they had a killer selection and a really nice little lounge with some leather chairs and a flatscreen. I wish I found that shop first.

I am heading up to the Yankees game this weekend to see the stadium with my step dad and uncle. All of us have never been.

The Davidoff shop in Columbus Circle is a little more laid back but not as big. Nice singles selection though. It's closer to JR's than the Madison Davidoff.
Last time I pass Nat Sherman's, there was some construction going on and a bum was sleeping in front of the door under the scafolding. LOL, I should have taken a picture.

Sounds like a nice trip.
I 'm glad you got to see the evil empire go down to our beloved Sox in the stadium before they demolish the place.

How much do you guys think they are going to be selling bits of rubble and seats, etc on eBay?

What would you pay for a piece of Yankee stadium. This is Sheas last year too, but I dont think anybody really cares.

Next time you're in the city, hit De La Concha on 6th between 56/57th. Better selection of smokes than either JR or Davidoff and the customer service there blows both places away. They also have some seating, if you are so inclined.

That figures. Tailor things toward the big spenders. I also heard that ticket prices are going up substantially in the new park. I guess the Steinbrenners need it to buy another pennant.

Sounds like a great time.
i heard someone on the tonight talking about his season tickets they were box seats and he paid $81K for them last year he got the bill for next year and the tickets were $810K he had his o;d seats for years and he also stated the YANKEES will no longer get his Buissness.
The redsox have done the same they are slowly but surely pricing the average Joe right out of the park.

But they are always on TV

I was at the game also. I bought a bunch of stogies at Barclay-Rex on 51st and Lex, a couple blocks from our hotel. Crappy game, great shop!
