Big trouble in little humi
I seem to be having a problem with my humi. I cant get it the RH% past 50. I properly treated the humidor prior to loading it. But I just can't get the humidity up. I even went as far as to put a 2nd humi disc in to see if that would help but no luck. Any suggestions please.

Re: Big trouble in little humi
Have you tested your hygrometer? Is it analog? It's probably off.

Re: Big trouble in little humi
When you drop the lid from about 2-3" it should not slam shut. You should hear a "whoosh" sound as the air escapes equally on all sides. If it make a "bang" its got a bad seal.

Re: Big trouble in little humi
Well you know what ole Jack Burton does at a time like this, test the hygo and if it's analog he tosses it and picks up a digital and some beads.

Re: Big trouble in little humi
The most important question is about the hygrometer. Analog ones are notoriously wrong. Mine read about 35-40 points low, explaining why I had mold growing inside the humidor during the seasoning process with an apparent RH of 50% (I added a big bowl of water trying to reach 65%). A digital hygrometer showed that my RH was perfect without the water (it was probably 85-90% with it). My seal isn't that great, and I still have no problem maintaining 65% humidity (and I'm in the desert where the native humidity is 5-15%).

Re: Big trouble in little humi
A calibrated digital hygrometer and beads will do nothing if the seal is bad. Start with the basics, then move on from there.

Re: Big trouble in little humi
I do have an analog hygrometer. I will take the advice and get a digital. As far as the seal goes its a solid wood box. Would it be wise to get a a seal of sometype or leave it as is?

Re: Big trouble in little humi
Drop the lid from about 3-4" open. It should land fairly softly if you have a good seal. If it bangs closed, you have a leak.

Re: Big trouble in little humi
Another easy test is to take a dollar bill and place it on the lip, close the lid, you should be able to easily pull the bill out. Work your way around the lid make sure its sealed.
Analogs can be off for a number of reasons, that doesn't make them bad it just needs calibration. A salt test or a boveda test bag (Cigarmony has them) will help with that. I prefer digital as well but that doesn't forgo the need to test and calibrate. |

Re: Big trouble in little humi
If you dont have a seal on your humidor, head down to menards or lowes and grab the thinest and slimest seal material and seal that bad boy. You can find this by the weather proofing section in any hardware store. It has a self adhesive back side so it makes it a sinch to fix your problem.
My first 20 count humidor had this issue also. Went down to Menards and fixed the problem for under 5 bills. |

Re: Big trouble in little humi
Try a light test. put a light inside the humi, darken the room, if you see a bunch of light, coming from the sealed part, you do want to do something to improve your seal.
Other than that, check your hydro, do a salt test, if its analog, chuck it, buy your self a decent digital. Good luck! Brad |
