Tonight's Smoke

I had a La Gloria Cubana Wavel tonight with a cup of decaf coffee. It was not the best smoke I have had. THis is usually one of my favorites. The draw was a little tight. About half way through I started picking out a few veins and the draw got a little better and is more what I am used to from this smoke. So the finish was good, but over all a little dissappointing.

Re: Tonight's Smoke

At least half of it was good. No cigar for me. Fired up the old pipe and enjoyed a good book. Also indulged in some coffee form my french press. I love that thing.

From what I hear, the glorias are usually an EXCELLENT go to smoke. No smoke for me since I smoked that Cohiba a few days ago. Might get a nice smoke in tonight though, maybe a Davidoff or something..

I think the Serie R and Reserva Figurado line of the La Glorias are great. The Wavell didn't impress me.

I just got one that had a very tight draw. The Wavell is one of my favorite cigars!!! It is a nice earth full bodied cigar. Once I picked out a couple of the veins and the draw improved, the cigar was fine!!! I probably should have done that earlier. I would still reccomend them. It is a great cigar.

I think with just about every cigar, once in a while you are going to get one with a tight draw. It was no big deal, I was just a little disappointed. But that was not the las LGC Wavell I will ever have!!!

Re: Tonight's Smoke

I feel weird smoking a cigar (brand) that is a copy of a cuban marque. I know there are several that are good, but I feel like I am doing an injustice to the name and heritage. When someone says LGC, Punch, Partagas- I only think of the Cuban brand, not the DR's etc...

Maybe I am missing out on some good smokes?

Re: Tonight's Smoke

I've been smoking La Gloria's for about 10 years or so,and have not really had a bad tasting Stick within those Years.Once in a while you may hit a bad one or two, but I always come back for more.Give it another shot,I think this time you will be pleased.

P.S. I'm not a big fan of Wavell's myself,but if that's your stick of choice,go for it.

i agree on all counts - also, i might recommend trying the torpedo #1. one of my fave NC smokes and they will age REAL well... interestingly (or not...) one of my friends had a maduro wavell recently that he said smoked up in about 25 minutes! is there a problem with these in recent batches?

last night, i tried and tried to talk myself out of a cigar, but i was weak. at least i only burned a NC Sancho Panza Extra Fuerte Cordoba - and had one too many bourbons... lol. fun little smoke, the SP is - any opinions?

I do not ever remember having much trouble with their cigars. They seem to have handled growth pretty well. I would guess I just got a bad one. But it really was not bad once I got the draw going.

I had been smoking LGCs from Miami for a couple of years. Then one issue of Cigar Afficionado had a review of the LGC ISOMs. At the time I thought that Cuba was ripping off the popular Miami Brand

THough I think there was some connection of the family who makes LGC Miami to the original Cuban Brand. So who really owns a brand name, the exiled family that made them and had production taken over by Castro's regime, or the regime that took control of a factory?

Some of the Cuban Marquee brands are very good others are not. Here is a quick rundown of my opinions:

Partigas is a great earthy kind of smoke. OK on value. I have to be in the mood for themk, but when I am, I like them.

Punch have been hit or miss with me, but I like the Rothchilds once in a while.

Cohiba: I think there were two companies making Cohibas, one was crap, the other that is still arond is OK, but way overpriced. Not worth the money. Spend a few $ extra and get the ISOM.

Montecristos are pretty good but I have not had a lot of them. A friend gave me one a few weeks ago and it fantastic. SOme of their lines have reasonable pricing too.

Hoyo de Monterrey makes a lot of my favorite smokes. I love the Excalibur series which is still a good buy when compared to other cigars on the market. If you ever have someone looking to try their first cigar, give them an Excalibur in a Connecticut Shade wrapper, and they will be hooked. Wrapper and smoke taste great in the mouth, and the arome is fantastic. When I smoke them, I always get those comments like "I don't usually like cigars, but those smell great." I got two ex-girlfriends to start smoking cigars using these.

Bolivar: The first attempt at Bolivar was not very good. I still have a few of them left, but would rather smoke my $1 LaFinca Robustos. I have not tried the newer version of Bolivars yet though.

La Gloria Cubana are a great full bodied smoke. If you can find a shop that sells them at retail price, then they are a great buy. There is a lot of gouging on their prices though, especially on the R-series.

I think you are missing out on some good cigars. It will be interesting to see what happens with the copyrights when the embargo is lifted. That is something that will need to be worked out. But if some of the above cigars were to go off the market after the embargo goes away, I would miss them dearly.

I like them. It is a great cigar for the money. I have a few in my humidor now. Nice medium/full bodided smoke that is never harsh. It seems to be a very good line.

Re: Tonight's Smoke

I smoked a great Camacho Machito with millow on my porch. I pulled it out of my humi when it was 74% and it burned so well and tasted great. All in all a great smoke
