You don't keep 7 y.o. Madagascar vanilla around for comparison? I got mine from MCS.

To answer the OP, I believe it's simply making fun of the snobbishness of the people that write and review for certain publications *cough*CigarAficionado*cough* as they use ridiculously complex descriptors for tastes that nobody ever actually tastes in cigars.

I think the joke is because after 5 years, the there is no additional flavor of Madagascar vanilla, so to say 7 years is just rediculous!

I figured this was the case, but I was wondering if it was one particular review that was so ridiculous that it pretty much became infamous around here.

Re: Seven Year Old Madagascar Vanilla?

Well I asked that same question to Paul couple of years ago while we were herfin..If I remember correctly, some knucklehead that thought he knew something about cigars once told him that he detected flavors of 7 yr old Mad Vanilla..Im sure Paul wanted to smack him..So he always said if you have that snobbish mentality then CS isnt for you..

Re: Seven Year Old Madagascar Vanilla?

Ridiculous. Everyone knows that Tahitian vanilla ages much better than Madagascar vanilla. Duh!

That said, several cigars do indeed exhibit vanilla-like flavor characteristics. When reviewing cigars it is often helpful to try to convey the experience in a manner familiar/universal to the readers. As such, many of these common descriptors (vanilla, leather, earth, nuts, etc.) are quite helpful and serve to provide the reader with a basis of comparison. I think that it can get blown way out of proportion (and reeks of hubris), though, when some opine that they can taste obscure, far-flung flavors in cigars. This defeats the purpose of conveying the flavors/experience in a manner that others can relate to. After all, it is just tobacco, LOL!

But, then again, what do I know...I AM a cigar snob, LOL!

I was actually also wondering if it was ever actually used by CA or anyone, making it the classic snobtastical thing to taste...

Re: Seven Year Old Madagascar Vanilla?

this is a joke?

i can always smell it, to the month, to the day
if some one fires up a cigar i can say, that is 4 years 2 months and 12 days madigascan, thursday, five o'clock, rolled by carlos and delivered by ups,

i'm so precise, i can even know where you purchase your cigars, and even your bank details, from this incredibly detailed scent

*SNIIIIFFFFFFFFFFF*

Re: Seven Year Old Madagascar Vanilla?

I recently enjoyed a cigar that had hints of seven yr old Madagascar vanilla, coupled with the slight scent similar to roasting the fleas of a thousand camels.
Quite interesting.

Re: Seven Year Old Madagascar Vanilla?

i'm a chef and i've never seen anyone keep vanilla for seven years. i did have one of my pastry chefs keep some in sugar for a year to flavor it. but vanilla has to be kept cold, or soaked in vanilla extract and simple syrup to rehydrate them. you can keep them forever but they will mold on you if you don't use citric acid but then they taste like citric acid. sorry i have o.c.d.
