Question Help with fan set-up.

I'm looking to do something similar (link below) for my tower unit. Looked into getting a hydra fan kit but Mark said there was a battery attachment needed for it. Is this just a normal oust fan or has it been midified? I can do electrical work (lights, outlets, breakers) but this seems a little different. Thanks for any feedback.

That's an Oust fan in a cigar box.
It's not going to move much air at all. The idea is more for it to cycle and pull a small amount of bead-conditioned air out of the box to feed the humi.
If you're trying to move some air, a lot more ass would be better.
You could use the same setup with some 60mm fans driven by an ac/dc adapter. That'd get the job done in a big humi.
One high and one low would even be better.
Do you have receptacles in your humi?

i have two, one is running a moist-n-air system. the top of the tower could use some circulation

Is one up top where you can plug in? Otherwise you'd have to run an extension cord and that'd suck.
Would noise be an issue? Reason I ask is that I have some 80mm fans and adapters and might be able to bang something like this out for ya.
I have lots of boxes, too.

outlet is at the bottom of the tower. would it be more noise than the moist-n-air? it makes a bit of noise but the humi is at the end of the house so it really doesn't matter.

I'll find a fan I can throttle down so it won't make any more noise than the moistnaire. I'm headed back out to the shop right now. I'll see what I can find and I'll send a pm later.

Re: Help with fan set-up.

If you use one of those larger 120mm computer case fans with the variable speed option, you can probably make a fan system that's almost inaudible.

A 120mm fan spinning at 1200rpm would push a lot of air compared to something like an oust fan but would be very quiet.

Something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835209005

At 1200 rpm, it 39CFM and only 25dBA (essentially inaudible). Even at 2000rpm, it's only 30dBA (79CFM) which when placed inside a wooden box and that box itself placed inside a cabinet, might as well be 0dBA since you aren't going to hear it.

I've been meaning to build something like this myself since I have a spare outlet inside my cabinet and the little hydra fan add on is a whiny little bugger that I'm not crazy about.

I just need an AC/DC adapter + timer control to a 5V fan like that.

I have a 120, 80, and 60mm fans. You should try fitting a 120 in a cigar box in a cigar box. It's a no worky.
80's are a tough fit, 60's are beautiful.
Vantec Stealths and Papst's are silent, but they cost money.
We're trying to get this done for nothing, cause we're cheap, old, and miserly.

Ahhh...yeah, good point.
I was actually making a "box" with some scrap wood that I had laying around. Basically a box frame with opening at the front and back.

BTW, what are you using for a timer control?

I was looking at: http://www.coolerguys.com/840556029977.html since it does the AC/DC transform and provides a nice molex connector for the fans. I just need something to switch the darn thing on/off at regular intervals.

The only thing I can come up with is to actually change the wall plate that the cabinet's AC plugs into so it's on a timer. But the drawback with that is my hydra would also be in a timer since it's a "strip" that's available inside the cabinet with just one cord.

Not using a timer. Not sure why you'd want one?
If the fan creates excessive heat, that'd probably be a good idea.
The ac adapter on this setup is going to be inside Richard's cabinet, so if heat becomes an issue, he'll have to plug the ac adapter in outside the humi and route the wire in from somewhere else.
If the humi is cooled, it's not an issue.

I don't think it would be necessary to continuously run the fan in a cabinet since all you really want is to just create a bit of circulation.

I wanted to essentially have it run for 15 mins every few hours.

Re: Help with fan set-up.

yes the cheaper the better, that's money i could use on smokes. would there be a lot of extra heat generated by the fan. unfortunately humi is not cooled.

No, not at all from the fan, but the ac adapter may be a concern. They put off heat.
All you can do is try it. I put a big long cord on it so if need be, you can route the adapter outside of the humi.
The box is already done, I'll try to get pics after dinner if I can.
It's damn fine, btw.
